Default 2008 LS460L vs 2008 LS600hL fuel economy

So the 2008 LS is finally up on lexus.com. The official fuel economy figures for both the LS460 and LS460L are 16/24 based on 2008 EPA numbers.

The official figures for the 2008 LS600hL are 20/22.

This finally puts to rest the strange idea that the LS hybrid somehow gets "poor" mileage compared with the regular LS. Keep in mind the hybrid also has AWD and the regular LS does not.

The hybrid despite having more power, more torque and being heavier gets a full 4 mpg better in the city (20% increase) and 22 mpg highway (8% decrease) over the LS460L. Now keep in mind that the regular LS does not have AWD (yet). With AWD, the LS460L's numbers would be something like 15/22.

Gas mileage is a big plus, but I don't find it that particularly important with this type of car.

Of course, just because it has a hybrid badge, everyone will talk about gas mileage. I just find it funny that people focus on that so much...

There is much more to the LS hybrid than just gas mileage, but since this has been quite the point of debate around here, I decided to clarify things .

exactly, gas mileage shouldn't be the selling point of these luxury hybrids. a lot of people just don't get the point. to me, the hybrids on the lexus lineup are just a better alternative for a larger, more powerful engine

The one thing (US purchasers) should care about, is that you don't have to pay the Gas guzzler tax. What exactly do they do with those proceeds anyways...

Not much difference in gas mileage. Like the rest, it shouldn't be the gas consumption that will concern you when you're buying a car at this level.

all of the lexus hybrids are for power not for economy! the 400h makes 270hp,
the 450h makes 340hp and the 600hl makes 425 on the engine alone!

Actually the 600hL makes 438hp (Total System), with the 5.0 L gasoline engine(detuned) alone making 389hp.
