Getting a high end sound system with an MP3 / IPOD seems to me to be an oxymoron.

yeah but still... no matter how quiet the Lexus RX 400h is, you will never be able to appreciate the sound difference between a CD (assuming of course it was a Digital to Digital original source recording) playing on the factory ML sound system and a MP3 recording. To those with a trained ear, perhaps quiet easily. To the rest of the common masses, you would have to concentrate on actually listening to find the differences in before and aft sampling. The vehicle is a poor environment to listen to music to appreciate the true nuances and crescendos. I think the capabilities of the ML system would not be in any way depreciated by listening to mp3 while driving. So I feel your point is still incorrect in stating what you did, even though the fact on black and white is true. Yes CD is better than mp3, in a proper sound environment (not recording studio, but lets say your home fidelity audio/video room), but in the car while driving (ac on, or heater, wind, road imperfections, vehicle harmonics, the wife blabbing away etc...) I do not think you can honestly tell the difference.

By the way the glass in a car makes it a terrible listening environment
