the 450h has cvt and the 460 has 8 speed. while the 8 speed is very smooth (i have ls460l so i know very well), the cvt with no shifting should give a smoother ride, and also quieter
the leather, please correct me, but i believe both you can get the higher grade leather now. they are both the same (softer) i believe

But I mistakenly typed 7 speed for the 460 when I meant 8.
and as for MPG on average get 24-26mpg, and that is 98% city driving.
When I took it on a long highway trip, I averaged 33MPG the entire way.

why lexus said the hybrid is faster than the 460?
thinking about getting one in next week, but don't know which one too. it's really hard for me to choose. I love the hybrid, but on the other hand I love the v8 on the 460 too.
I love both cars. but can afford only one, so still thinking

head to head starting at 0mph, I would think the 460 will pull ahead, then at slightly higher speed, the 450h will probably gain some lead but not much. 5.2 vs 5.4 (0-60)
but you know the manufacturer's figure is always on the conservative side, so we know it's faster than that

I drove both the GS460 and GS450h (I asked to drive both to compare) at Moroso Motorsports Park at the IS-F test drive event. Driving these cars on a race track helps sort out which one is a better "performer" VERY quickly. My daily driver being a GS400, I actually went into this biased and assuming that the muscular V8-powered GS460 would be my choice. After driving both, here are my impressions.
I would get the GS460 if:
1.) I needed the extra trunk space
2.) I was really that attached to the V8 exhaust note
I would get the GS450h:
1.) for every other reason under the sun. The new GS460 is simply NOT a sport sedan, even despite the commercials showing it doing donuts. Lexus is basically has created another two-choice price point for us (the other being IS vs ES). The GS450h is definitely the more active of the two, assuming you have the optional APSSS system. The throttle response on the 450h was better than the GS460. The GS460's drive-by-wire system is definitely calibrated for smooth, normal daily driving. Transmission shifting... the 450h uses a CVT so it is always in the right gear when you want to punch it. The GS460 takes a very long time to downshift. In fact, i kid you not when I say a Honda Odyssey minivan I've driven once had quicker downshifts than this car! As far as handling, the GS450h with its APSSS in sport mode wins this hands down as well. The GS450h's body roll is kept very much in check. The GS460 was flopping around like a whale in comparison when you get frisky in the turns. Even though the GS460 has a V8, the GS450h has a more low down grunt because the power from the electric motor is available instantaneously. Brakes were good on both cars. However, I felt that you had better initial bite on the GS450h. To top this off, the hybrid will be easier on the gasoline.
The thing about the GS450h is that even though it performs better as a sport sedan than the GS460, it does not give up anything on the luxury side. You can switch the suspension to "normal" mode and it will be every bit as smooth as the 460. To me, the 450h simply does everything the 460 does, it just does it the same or in many cases much better than the 460 does. The only exception to this, as noted before, is the difference in trunk space.
EDIT: my friend was with me, who owns an Ford SVT Lightning. He is normally all about the large V8's and smirks at hybrids when he sees him on the road. He too agreed however, that the 450h was easily a more athletic car and that it was actually very impressive what this car accomplishes.

nice review, but i can't agree on the handling part. you drove a 450h with APSSS, but how about the gs460? if it has the APSSS as well, i would imagine handling to be extremely similar. if the gs460 has APSSS but the 450h still handles better, then i agree with you and probably the 450h has better weight distribution
and also, couple posts talked about that the 450h in PWR is a totally different animal

Ahh, I wasn't aware that they are offering the 460 with the APSSS. You are right in that they will probably handle pretty comparably to each other in that case if both vehicles are equipped with it.

The car is great. Some days i love it and other days not...the car just doesnt do it for me....i miss my SC430.
plus i'm trying to buy a house (here in los angeles) and need all the money i can get (a one million dollar house here is absolute garbage!!!). if can sell the car, i'd get something a lot cheaper until i can afford a nice lexus again...

out of everything that Faraaz23 mentioned, I will agree with the 8sp auto, it does take a quite a bit of time from the initial punch down of the accelerator for it to down shift and get the power in the right band, that's also another reason why it was kinda hard for me to go pass 4k rpm when I tried to gun it. Having this many gears is very helpful on the mileage but I think it compromises response time. (Henry, Care to share how it's like in the LS460? kinda hard to try out all the gears at taste of lexus due to its short course

saying that hybrid has a better initial bite from the brake makes me feel like the reviewer is somewhat biased toward hybrid. Due to the regenerative braking, there was always something odd about the brakes, I was told by the sales when we owned our rx400h and also told by other owners and also confirmed by myself during taste of lexus, hybrid simply brakes differently than normal car, perhaps that's the reason why you felt a difference. Better bite? hardly.
perhaps I am a bit biased toward the 460, but prior to my purchase, I drove all types of GS extensively to see the difference. I finally settled on the 460 for reasons I previously stated.
if we can get some manufacturer to dyno the 460, we really do hope the 342hp is understated or perhaps future ECU adjustment can fully unleash the GS460 to its full 380hp like its big brother.
just my 2 cents...
