Can't really say it's good or bad, because "bad" can actually means good

Psssst ... jlawr ... he meant the headlights look really cool, or good. I'm old, too, but I'm pretty sure that's what he meant.

You never want to be behind someone in a car whose age exceeds their horsepower.

Down in Florida, you run into that way too often.

Thankfully, for us old farts, the LS600hL has ample horsepower.

How old is old?

And in an age where 60 is the new 50, what does that make 10 yr-olds?

Huh????

Your asking people that can afford and LS600HL whether it makes sense??

People need to stop trying to use logic in regards to buying cars, you buy what you can afford and want.

I drive a Lexus, I could have chosen a camry or VW, if i wanted to be logical.

Note: I dont drive an LS600h, sheesh i wish.

No, I didn't ask them if it makes sense. I merely asked them what their motivation was, since most people opting for ANY kind of hybrid these days are after economy (which the LS600 doesn't offer).

We've established that it's for prestige and exclusivity, some equipment available only on the 600, and for a measure of performance. In fact, the LS600h is apparently more of an engineering exercise than anything, and perhaps a "performance hybrid".

Oh, and I made it clear I wasn't being rude ...

This statement is simply wrong.

Economy is relative.

The Prius offers TERRIBLE mileage when compared to 100+ MPG mopeds, but that's not a fair comparison.

MPG was nowhere NEAR the top of my list of reasons to buy the LS600hL, but the AWD LS600hL (certified as a Super Ultra-Low Emission Vehicle - SULEV) offers much better mileage than any other vehicle in it's class.

Lexus LS600hL 20 mpg city / 22 mpg hwy
Mercedes S550 14 mpg city / 21 mpg hwy
BMW 760L 13 mpg city / 20 mpg hwy

The Lexus city 20 mpg is over 45% greater than the Mercedes 14mpg city and over 50% greater than the BMW.

That's 45% better!

While "Economy" is mostly a non-sequetor when talking about these $100K+ luxury cars, facts are facts, and the fact is that the LS600hL gets much better mileage than it's peers.

You're parsing my comments, Helmar. I merely said that "most people opting for ANY kind of hybrid these days are after economy (which the LS600 doesn't offer)", and I think that's a true statement.

If you say "hybrid" to 100 people, I'd dare say 99 of them would think Prius or Civic Hybrid or something along those lines. If you found the one person who would say "Hybrid? Yeah, the Lexus LS600h comes to mind", I think you would have just been lucky.

The environmentalists and greenies and tree huggers are all about hybrids to save gas and the planet, and they would mostly be agast at the LS600h. It's big, it's heavy, it's in your face, and it uses more gas than a Prius, so it ain't no 'genuine' hybrid to them.

I appreciate that it does a little better than some of its brethren, but that doesn't make it economical. Thing is, I'm not being critical of you for wanting a big plush, techno-rich car. This is America and I say go for it if you want it!

Here's more confirmation from: http://www.familycar.com/RoadTests/LexusLS600/

"Lexus tells us that people in this high-end market want subtle. More than 80 percent of the folks in this group are self-made. They describe themselves as middle-class at heart and are uncomfortable with flaunting their wealth. What they are looking for is a high quality automobile that is comfortable, but not overly ostentatious. If the car is expensive, it had better be because of high technology designed for an intelligent purpose, not for rare, exotic wood or pure gold trim or a diamond-studded hood ornament."

Yup, that's pretty much me.
