Default Thinking about trading in my 98 GS400 for a base Hybrid

This cash for clunkers credit is interesting, but if I trade in my old GS I can only get the credit on a base AWD model based on the $45,000.00 cap.

Good luck with it. It will be the right choice.

To me, that Government offers this one-time $3.5K and $4.5K credit is attractive and might be kind of useless, but I probably can get the similar amount of discounts from the dealers now and buy the good/OK MPG vehicle I prefer. IMHO. $45k cap is too low. Perhaps, I should buy Civic and enjoy its high MPG with the discount from the dealer and credit from Government.

Btw, does this only apply to US-brand cars or US-made cars?

It is not a credit. You give your car to the dealer and he gives you a check for $4,500 and they send it to the junk yard to be scrapped. It only works to your favor if you car is worth less than $4,500 which I doubt would be the case for a 98 GS400

Thanks for your info. I never paid attention to this bill since I know my cars aren't qualified.

If Governemt wants to give me $, I will take it. If not, I'm fine with it. I still buy whatever I prefer.

no "check" is given to you. the $4,500 credit is applied to the purchase price, and the government hands the dealership the check

I have 178,000 miles on my 98 GS so this may be a good deal for me.
