no i know it is not the car. If I stay away from the hilly parts of SF, I can definitely get higher mpg. I was even able to see 50+ one time right after a fill up and then only driving on flat roads with good signal lights that were continuous. The problem is that I cant avoid the hills when I drive to work. I suppose if I moved to the suburbs it would be much better for mpg numbers

I have a 2010 that has 36000 miles. I have averaged 23.1 mpg . Before that I owned a 2007 RX 350 and averaged 18.4 over 33000 miles. Wonder if it is my driving habits or short drives ( usually 2 to 3 miles). Looks like I should be getting better mileage than what I am seeing. I am considering a 2013 hybrid. Wonder if my mileage would be any better. Both vehicles were/ are AWD.

TSmith,
I have an '08 400h AWD with 33K and could echo your comment except for not having had a previous RX. General mixed driving I've gotten 22.5 winter and 23.5 summer. Long trips it goes up a bit. This is on 87 octane and 10% ethanol fuel.
Glad to see someone else with similar results. I don't know how people are achieving these high 20s unless they really "*****foot" around on premium fuel.

I know that's right! Summer has pulled down our mpg's. I could average over 30 quite frequently in the cooler months. But during the last couple of months of hot weather, we are down to around 28 mpg. The air conditioner has to work harder, which drains the hybrid battery, which affects how much help the engine gets - it's a chain reaction.

The 1st 18 months obtained an overall average of 26.1 MPG (8100 miles in highway/city combined). The last two major highway trips in May/June up and down the Cascade Mountains (~ 500 miles for each round-trip) have seen an average of 30 MPG. It does seem like it is now broken in with a little better MPG being obtained. I only use the premium grade gasoline (Shell, Chevron, Texaco--91 or 93 grade).

My first Rx was a 2008 400h FWD and I averaged ~28mpg over several thousand miles. I've had my 2013 Rx450h AWD for about 3 weeks / ~ 1000 miles. My best day was 30.4 but it does feel like it's harder to get the kind of mpg I was getting before. I now struggle to get 28 for a given day...so I've stopped tracking by day and will start tracking by fill up. Perhaps it's not broken in yet?
I definitely feel a difference in free wheel coasting with AWD. My 400h seemed like it would coast forever. In my 450h I can feel the drag as soon as I take my foot off the accelerator pedal - much like a traditional tranny. It won't coast even half the distance of my 400h.
Combined mpg is stickered at 29 for AWD. Maybe I just need to figure out how to drive this one. It did take a while to find the sweet spots in my 400h. I could drive 60mph and the mpg meter would consistently show 40mpg on the 400h. On the 450h 60 mph barely shows 25mpg. (Premium ony in the tank thus far)
I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I'll figure it out!

Brent, welcome to the RX forum and like Anita said there are quite a few different examples of mileage. For myself I get around 30 or slightly better but I don't drive like I used to. I figure if I pay extra for the (h), I should drive reasonably enough to make it worthwhile. It's not that hard either. Let us know how you're doing.

Lots of discussion of mileage in various existing threads. Here is my take for the FWD version; just knock off a mile or two per gallon for the AWD version. I consider the car a rock solid 26 MPG vehicle. You can drive it normally and not worry about mileage and it will do at least 26 or 27. This is comfortable driving that will allow you to keep up with or lead traffic, drive in the fast lane on the freeway at real speeds (75 MPH) and accelerate away from stops in a solid manner. So you are having a little fun driving the car. On the other hand if you understand how the car operates and drive conservatively, you can hit the EPA target of 30 MPG combined. You will need some focus while you are driving and think ahead. Your driving decisions will be heavily biased toward mileage. Other drivers around you may/will sense you are trying to squeeze some mileage out of the vehicle. At times it may try your nerves and those of other drivers. But, a lot of people are doing this lately. IMO driving like this is a slight pain; although there are many on this forum that may find it an entertaining challenge. Finally, if you pull all of the hypermiler tricks out of the bag and drive in low traffic areas (also some flat parts of the country) it is possible to push mileage beyond the EPA 30 MPG. On summer gas (higher mileage than winter blends), I can get 31 with a little effort and higher. Around town the 30 to 32 MPG range is usually possible. I've been able to get as high as 34 or 36 for short trips of 50 miles driving where mileage was my focus.
Urban Driving: 26 - 32 MPG
Freeway Driving: 25 - 32 MPG (speed, wind plays a big role here)
Combined: 26 - 31 MPG (depending on driving style, season, location and conditions)
Lexus is introducing the ES Hybrid in August. It is rated at something like 40 MPG and early reviews are very positive. I drove my brother's Prius Plug-in and it is an amazing car for people that are interested in mileage. Last time I checked with him he was averaging 290 MPG.

2012 AWD 450H. I average 8liters/ 100K on all combined. My highway milage is slighty higher at about 8.5 and if I drive conservativley in the city I can easily keep around 7.2L /100k.. Remember that the lower the number the better the milage. In my average is towing a trailer with a couple of quads or Seadoo's about 100Km each way a few times here and there. Even then I got about 10L /100K. Having the AC on does affect milage even though it is electric I have found. Not enough to turn it off and I am sure its less than opening the windows on the highway but just a heads up about it.

For my 2010 AWD 450h:
20,758 miles, average speed 30, lifetime miles per gallon is 26.7, last tankful was 26.8, 91 octane gasoline, ECO is now permanently off.
To me, the mpg performance is below expectations and in hindsight it might have been better to save the extra dollars that the hybrid cost and instead purchased a non-hybrid.

My experience w/ RX450h mpg
Just wanted to provide some data points for those interested...
I've had my RX450h FWD for 13 days and have driven it daily through a mix of roughly 40% city rush-hour, 30% urban freeway and 30% suburban parkway traffic. I ended my first tank of gas (dealer supplied) at 24.5mpg, after hitting a high of 25.6 at one point.
I'm on my second tank of gas, 93 oct from Costco, and I managed to hit 28.0 mpg with this tank this morning. I'm now at 27.9 mpg with this tank and my overall average is 23.6, with an average speed of 18mph. I would say my driving style is to accelerate to cruising speed quickly and pump occasionally to maintain speed / coast, leave plenty of room between me and the car in front and to maintain a steady slow speed in stop-start traffic (in other words, bloody annoying to other motorists).
Finally, and this may or may not be germane to my experience but at about 200 miles the dealer switched out my Dunlops, which were inflated at 35-36 psi for Michellins which are inflated at 31 psi.
