Arrow Tire Life on RX400h

Hi All,

I have a 2008 RX400h with 37K miles. It has been having several significant problems since it had $20k miles (or before). Road noise, engine noise, grinding sound etc. Dealership had been blaming it on tires. Today I dropped off the car for oil change and fixing these other problems. They test drove and said that road noise is so much that we can't diagnose other problems. Typical tire life is 20-30k miles so pay $1200 first for changing the tires and then we will try to diagnose other things.

Tires definitely have significant tread on them. Dealership suggested that even though it seems that tires have enough tread but edges don't have enough tread because of too many U turns in NJ. BTW, I never drive hard or turn fast on corners etc.

I called Lexus customer satisfaction and they also said that 25K is the typical life of a tire. I don't know which OEM tire does it currently have because it is at the dealership right now but I wanted to hear other people's experience with their RXs vis-a-vis tire life and tire noise.

I have a lexus es330 (2004) as well - it is such a perfect car but 400h has been pretty disappointing.

Thanks in advance for your comments.

AJ

Once you get your car back, you can go to the Tire Rack web site and research the OEM tires and see what their tread wear warranty is. 37k miles sounds pretty good to me. In my previous vehicles, I was lucky to get 30k miles out of them.

However, with my wife's MDX we were able to get nearly 60k. My mother and father in law were able to get nearly 100k miles out of their OEM Michelins which is quiet amazing to me.

You could try getting a second opinion if you have a mechanic/shop you trust.

Good luck and I hope you are able to get these issues resolved.

We bought ours with about 37k miles on it. Tires were toast. New tires gave it a much quieter and smoother ride (no surprise).

If you have a good repore with your salesperson or service manager, you might be able to work something out. Maybe they have a set of take off's laying around from the used car department to put on your Rx so they can diagnose. It's alot to ask, but they want to keep you happy.......If it turns out to be tires- buy them and don't forget the alignment (cause thats the real issue). But if its not, you won't be paying for tires to find out more bad news.
Good luck

ps, I will add however, the torque of the Hybrids are REALLY hard on tires tho.

My original tires were Goodyear and they only lasted about 18000 miles. I replaced them with Bridgestone Alenzas which worked well in NJ snow. They seemed to be wearing well as I got rid of the car at 43,000 miles. I'm happier with my 2010 RX350.

I just bought a CPO 2008 400h with 25K miles, and the dealer had put on new tires when making it CPO. Since the car was leased before they bought it in an auction, they couldn't give a reason on tire wear. However, they stressed rotation every 5 K miles. I had a similar problem on Toyotas (Avalon nd Sienna) with the original tires. The Avalon needed frequent alignments as well.
