2011 RX450h vs Highlander Hybrid
#31
Another reason to stay full hybrid like ours and not go total electric besides range hasn't been mentioned yet. Most of us have homes and garages with convenient weather proof sockets to plug into. Trying to market the smaller total electric cars to what is still the majority (apartment dwellers) doesn't make much sense to them.

No, I don't play soccer!
I could charge up at work if I had an electric car. They offer charging stations and have quite a few electric vehicles on campus. But the Volt is butt ugly and it's a car. I'm not about to downgrade especially after being in the RX so long. Hybrid's fine for me.

I wouldn't want a Volt, that's for sure. There ugly ( i believe that's been mentioned) and it's a Chevy.... So, no thank you. LOL
I wouldn't want a Leaf either, if it had a backup gasoline engine like the volt I'd think about it if I were deciding between the volt and the leaf.
Either way, no entirely electric cars for me. Too slow for my taste, and no luxury. Not to mention too quiet.

Don't forget, electric cars take forever to charge back up. The quickest you can charge is like 3 hours, and you have to install special charging station.
I'm no expert, but pumping that much current that quickly into a battery, it can't be good for the the battery life.

I hate hearing people saying the hybrid cost is not worth it. I have had 5 hybrids-all Toyota's and have always gotten the hybrid difference back when I sold the car. Don't forget re-sell or trade-in value, for when fuel cost are high so is the re-sell of the hybrids and I think the cheap days of fuel are over.

Picked the RX450h
Update: after looking around for the last few weeks, I've decided to pick up an CPO RX450h to replace my IS350 at lease end. It's an 2010 Ultra Premium package(all options) red on tan, with about 12K miles.
The dealer is trying to sell me some additional protection packages such as
Final Coat Exterior paint protection $500
Final Coat Interior protection $500
Titan Vehicle protection $1000
Let me know if anyone has anything on these above items

Two grand of options for about $200 cost with labor.
Get the car, hire someone to that for you if you want it.

While I would agree that the Ext/Int protection plans are not worth it, I believe the Titan protection can be justified. It covers loss/stolen/destroyed key fob, tires/rim damages from road hazards, body Dents and Dings and windshield chips and cracks with no deductibles.

Just be careful of the dents and dings, as it may not cover anything that needs to be painted. Also the rim protection may not cover if your tires hold air. The damage must cause the tires to go flat. Superficial damage may not be covered.
Ask how often they will reapply the ext/int protection for how many years.

A "real" or "true" hybrid will can drive itself purely on battery power alone up to a certain speeds.
All Toyota/Lexus hybrids will do this.
Cars such as the Chevrolet Malibu Eco cannot drive alone on battery. It has small battery to provide power to accessories at stops and shuts off the engine when coasting. The battery in these types is more of an assist to the gasoline motor and can provide an extra power boost. It does have regenerative braking to recharge as well.
