3.5 Litre Atkinson cycle V6
Adapted specifically for the hybrid powertrain, the 3.5 litre, DOHC,
V6 petrol engine benefits from several technical improvements. It
adopts the Atkinson cycle, Cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR)
and Exhaust Heat Recovery (EHR) to optimise the fuel-efficient benefits
of Lexus Hybrid Drive.

With conventional four-cycle petrol engines, there are times when ‘fuel
enrichment’ becomes necessary, cooling exhaust gases to prevent
degradation or destruction of the catalytic converters. Because the intake
valves close late in an Atkinson cycle engine, compression is delayed.
This creates a high expansion ratio for less compression, reducing intake
and exhaust energy losses and converting combustion energy to engine
power more effectively. As a result, the exhaust temperature is lower than
that of conventional engines.

Via a bespoke delivery manifold, the EGR system reintroduces precisely
metered exhaust gas into the intake system, further reducing engine
operating temperatures, whilst also reducing engine pumping losses
through a decrease in intake vacuum pressure.

The new GS 450h’s next generation D-4S system features new slit-type
injector nozzles with a modified port shape, a higher fuel pressure for
more efficient combustion, and idle port injection for improved NHV
characteristics.

Engine noise, vibration and friction has been lowered through the
adoption of lightweight chain technology, a piston pin offset change and
a reduction in the number of drive belt reinforcement ribs.

In addition, engine durability has been improved through the removal
of all external oil lines, and environmental performance enhanced by
a new-specification catalyst which contains greatly reduced levels of
precious metal.

Additional Hybrid System Component Improvements
The cooling performance of the hybrid system’s Power Control Unit
(PCU) has been improved through the adoption of dual cooling paths
and a single-piece, integrated AC/DC converter.
System control has been enhanced. The PCU boosts motor drive
voltage to a maximum 650V in SPORT S mode and limiting it to a
maximum of 500V in ECO mode to provide a more environmentally–
friendly driving performance.

The electric motor features lighter mounts and a reduction in friction. And
the system’s regenerative braking operation range has been expanded,
contribution to further improvements in fuel efficiency.
In addition, the battery layout has been redesigned; a new stacked
configuration maximising luggage space.

(shows pretty much everything but GS450h, much nicer than previous info!)

Yeah, the MPG numbers are going to be for anyone with a current gen GSh (and I praise them for that), but I just think it's weak that they couldn't even "up" it to 350 or 360hp while making the other improvements. That's all.
they raised hp by 47hp compared to similar setup in RX450h... i call that a lot :-).
Otherwise it would be considerably slower car.

it also got higher top speed, now 250kmh instead of 240kmh.

there are now paddle shifters for the GS450h.

Trunk is bigger than trunk of 2011 GS350 (previously it too small for anything, just like M35h's).

I really love the interior pics here and love the ode to the 2GS with the way the wood is across the doors (though I love the curved wood in the 3GS).

Rear sunshades, never saw that before. I still wish Lexus would offer a larger sunroof option though on the GS.

It really is like a mini-LS in the features dept.

0-60 in 5.6 seconds for the new GS450h is beyond disappointing considering Lexus claims the current 2011 GS450h does it in only 5.2 seconds.

I was sure that Lexus was going to begin producing cars I would actually want to buy again, but I have been so disappointed with the bland styling and lack of power from the new GS. As it sits now, the only Lexus I like is the IS...which I would not buy anyways due to it's size and age. I am thinking a new, freshened Jaguar XF Supercharged or XFR is in my future. My current 02 GS430 that I have had for years was my first and as it stands now, will be my last Lexus.

if the gs450h is all about gas mileage and not performance (forget it, don't even mention the word v8), to be honest i am a little afraid to think about what the gsf would be like

what kind of comparison is that. the rx and gs use different gasoline engine to begin with. the 47hp you quoted is completely meaningless because a lot of that is actually from the gasoline engine.

and in the end, who cares about comparison between gs and rx. bottom line is gsh now makes less hp than before and slower than before, but with a noticeable jump in gas mileage. so to buy this car, one has to really love saving green than to having fun.

btw, so the gsh won't have cvt? what's the point of paddle shift when you have cvt?

Yea, I manually shift mine now. Does nothing for simulating gears. All its good for is dropping the drive-line into a lower (Better charging/regen) ""gear""

I'm sorry, there is nothing on the new GSh I like. At all. Maybe it will drive up the values on the 3rd Gen GSh's

Looks like they are being honest about the 0-60 times. The 3GS 450H did not really do 0-60 in 5.2 secs. All the tests I read put in the 5.5 area.

"Exclusive to the hybrid model is a unique three-lamp design that aligns the turn signal and Lexus-first high and low beam LED lamps in a single horizontal row."

So the LED headlight is not available to 350? not even as an option?

I'm going to have to agree with Rominl on this one. The public does't care if this engine has 47hp more than the RX. It's not a selling point. The final number matters more to the customers.

Even 350hp would have been nice to see.
