Tires and tire pressure
Finally pulled the trigger and put new tires on my 2006 RX400h. The Bridgestone Alenzas had 40K and had become so loud we could barely carry on a conversation. Based on a number of recommendations I purchased a set of Michelin MXV4 S8s and they are a lot quieter. We'll see how they hold up. When I asked the tire shop what pressure they were set to they said 30psi. I commented that 30 seemed kind of low and they said to look inside the door. Right they are. The tires say 44psi max cold. I have always run my tires a few below the maximum called for as I assumed this would give me the best mileage. The Bridgestones say 52psi and I ran them at around 50. What's the story?
Thanks

Overinflating a tire will lead to excessive wear in the middle of the tread, as well as contribute to a harsh ride and potentially make the tire/rim more susceptible to impact damage.

Keep in mind I live in FL and the roads are near perfect. If I lived up north 37 PSI may not be the right choice .

Our last set of tires wore out on the edges first. Both the inside and outside edge were worn so this was not alignment. My guess is the Lexus specs a slight under inflation to give the car more of a luxury ride. My hope is 37 PSI wears the tire more evenly. 37 PSI has also increased high speed stability.

Just to let everyone know I have been searching a replacement set for the Michelins OEM.
Been looking at the Bridgestone Dueler Alenzas forever. Costco has the $70 off a set. This might be the cheapest you can get a set.
Then came the Dueler Ecopia from Bridgestone. Slight cheaper by $10 per tire and it is a 65,000 mile tire. Supposed to save on gas.
I will try it. BTW the coupon ends on 04/11/12 for Costco.

I used factory recommended specs and periodically check tire pressure to make sure all 4 are the same with a digital tire gauge. I do notice the dealership have put about 40 PSI on the tires before and I did over inflate my old set before too but they worn out a lot faster and a new set of tires aren't exactly cheap anymore these days
so I ran factory specs and still get decent 24-26mpg between highway and in town driving.

There is no one "best" tire. Each of us have different needs and driving styles which will impact our purchasing decisions. Seeing that you live in GA you could be more interested in a summer/rain tire if you do not see much snow in your area, or you may be like me who, while I live in FL, travels and has a need for an all-season tire capable of handling several inches of snow without issue. Also, what holds true for the RX330 and RX350 is basically true for your RX400h, so do not just limit your questioning to just the hybrids.

I just filled up my tires from 29f/27r to 35f/33r and I could not believe the difference in roll resistance. The overall ride stiffened up and the car feels like it rolls a bit more in the turns, but the car now feels like it has quite a bit more power. I've also noticed that the ICE doesn't engage as soon as it use to (granted my driving habits are as similar as can be), which leads me to believe that the ICE doesn't engage solely based on throttle position, but by a function of rolling resistance.
