DIY reset when out of gas

discovered the same when I went completely dry in a Camry XLE Hybrid and me and my AAA driver after gassing me up were baffled. Disconnect the 12V battery (usually in the trunk compartment) , wait a few ticks and reconnect, that resets the electronics that allows the vehicle to account for the "no longer empty" gas tank.
