Hybrid TechnologyUnique topics related to the 2010 - 2015 RX450H model hybrid drivetrain and other features/options found only on the RX450H. Please use the main forum for discussion about shared components with other third generation RX models.
RX450H does not use 12v starter motor, so the current peak demand is low as compared to non-hybrid. High voltage battery provides the power/current to the electric motor which spins the engine to enable start.

We know that the 12v aux battery only runs the electronics while MG powered by the traction battery starts the engine.
One would assume they use a larger 12v since its using the 3.5 V6, and just better in general in case of leaving headlights on, interior light on by accident, stereo, etc.
RX owners have been *****ing the last 13 years about that after paying $60000 and having a weaker 12v than a Corolla, Camry, Rav 4, UX, Highlander, CT, IS, ES, , old GS, LS

The beauty of engineering is to solve a problem and not create other problems. In theory one can install larger capacity battery, but that adds weight and increased load in charging. The advantage will be with larger capacity one can drain the battery for a longer time. An engineered solution would be choosing the right component for the right job. Even charging system in hybrid is bit unique as that is done a bit miserly. Interesting thing is that engineers have to look out for cost as well [profit ... sale of vehicle is business driven]. So they make compromises on weight etc.
Simply put the sustained and peak current demands on the battery for hybrid and non-hybrid are different. Once the replacement time comes, you can choose something that makes sense for you. A change will disturb the design point.
Engineers can make mistakes too. Were they wrong in choosing/specifying battery for 450H?
I did not see a filter on my OEM battery vent, but to be honest, it may have been part of the OEM battery and I never went looking for it.
If it was part of the OEM battery, it must be there for a reason ... and if your blow through test showed "not much resistance" then it is probably fine to leave it in.
I believe that most group 35 batteries with side vents have a vent on both sides (see attached photos of your battery) and the vent that is not being used needs to be plugged. In my case, I plugged the unused vent with silicone caulking. Other posts have indicated that the unused vent can be sealed with a plastic push in plug.
It is worth pointing out to readers of this thread that it is essential to plug off the unused vent, otherwise in upset conditions the battery will vent taking the path of least resistance, which will be through the unused (unplugged) vent and into the passenger compartment.
Hey folks,
Happy to report a success Walmart EverStart Platinum AGM 35 battery replacement on my 2011 RX450h. I had to buy the Dorman 924-254 Vent tube kit and used the L shape adapter for the vent (the original did not fit).
- It was the original battery that I replaced, although I have not seen any issue, but felt like I am on borrowed time, and do not want to take any chances ... I would be interested in if anyone else out there that is still running on the original battery that is older than 14 years?
- After the new battery installed, starting up the car and saw the booting message, do not turn off etc...
- One minor issue: when tried to close the rear hatch via the button on the front or with the remote, it did not close and sounded 2 beeps.
- Someone else had the same issue on this thread and suggested to manually close it.. I turned off the engine, manually close the rear door, then turn on the engine again: it worked
p/s: don't forget to plug the un-used vent hole on the other side of the battery... Hope this helps someone!
