ES300h does 50 mpg!

You guys are making me jealous! the best I have gotten was 37 MPG going from NYC to VA. but, I drive a bit aggressively. Do any of you find that the fuel plays any part in this? I've been using 76's regular octane, almost exclusively. My normal driving is meager, at best! Dec. 29th will mark my 1st year anniversary. and I only have 4000 miles on it! Oh, I've been meaning to aks, what is the little, hidden, trapdoor, just under the 4way flasher button? I guess it was either for map upgrades, or dealer/factory maintenance.
As far as the trapdoor, that is only on the 2015 and up and is the memory stick/flash drive for the map data. Have fun and enjoy the ride.

I recently started playing around with pulse & glide and saw a significant improvement in my mileage. I don't bother with it on ~50 mile highway portion of my commute, but on the ~10 mile back road portion it gives me an extra 2 or even 3 mpg, pretty cool. Thanks chromedome!

My 2014 ES300H and Gas Prices
I am a proud owner of a 300h for about 18 months now. The car has given me no problems, it is as advertised. Living in New Mexico where interstate speed limit is 75 or faster if you wish. This car hasn't disappointed. Looking back one of the main reasons I bought it was MPG and fuel costs. Well gas prices are $1.75 @gal. Maybe I should have bought a 350? I looking back I have no regrets. I think I'll take it to the dealer and get washed. What a great car!!!!!!

It's harder now to do pulse and glide in winter because the engine has to run to keep itself and the cats warm. I hooked up an OBD dongle and used an Android app to see what the car is doing - at idle, with the engine running in generator mode at 1000 rpm, engine load is only 20%. It's not very efficient but it's better to generate electricity for the batteries than just warm up the air. Coolant temp varies between 75-90 C, the power converters sure get hot.
Accelerating at 2000 rpm, engine load is 50%. I wonder if that's a good rpm value for max BSFC. My OBD scanner doesn't show instant mpg so I can't find a good rpm target for pulsing. Anyone recommend a good Android app for OBD scanning?
I've managed 54 mpg on my commute by sticking to urban roads and avoiding highways. It's a shorter distance but takes 10 minutes longer, whereas using the highway gets me 45 mpg at most now. This stuff gets addictive for us tech heads
