Default Wear and tear on the 450h starter?

Anyone wonder if the starter on the 450h is going to wear out? It gets used way more than a non-h model.

Just wondering if Lexus maybe made it more heavy duty or not. Seems like a high wear item.

In my limited understanding of the vehicle, I do not think that we have a traditional starter. The electric motor spins the engine which functions as the starter. Therefore it should be no more wear and tear than using the electric motor normally.

That is interesting. Going to have to research this.

I would assume what ever it is it must be quite robust.

There are two electric motors, also working as generators, in the front hybrid drive system. The combustion engine (ICE), are mated to the planetary gears (CVT) via the motor-generator 1 (MG1). The CVT is further mated to the drive axle via motor-generator2 (MG2). When vehicle is standing still, no system is moving. When MG1 starts, the ICE has to follow along, and start. When vehicle is moving, The MG2 has same speed as the drive axle, and if the ICE has stopped, the MG1 rotates to compensate for the movement in the CVT. If ICE nedds to start while vehicle is moving, you simply brake the MG1 (putting it in generator mode), at it will force the ICE to turn over.

The MG1 are used to start the ICE only at full stopps. Since this motor is 100 times bigger than a traditional starter, and has no gears needing to engage, the wear is wery wery low.

Don't worry, this system has far less wearable parts than a traditional drivetrain. Before I bought mine, I rode With a RX450h cab, he had 200 000 miles on the clock - and had been unfortunate to have to change one headlight

After reading yours and doing other research, I see that it is quite robust. Thanks for the information
