My 2007 450h is at dealership-needs new HID DS headlight due to ballast
I'm not pleased with the cost to replace the headlight ballast that comes to:
Labor: $240.19
Parts: $1,231.73
Taxes: $123.73
Misc: $3.24
Total: $1,598.89
for a TOTAL bill of : $2,779.53
The car is awesome, I've had it for a few years now and love it. Having the plugs done (I'm at about 147k and they were done at about 60k) feed her only synthetic oil and dealer servicing (Rohrman in Arlington Hts, IL, honest blokes) and have had some HID issues. I've replaced the bulbs 2x myself. Not a quick job for a guy with large hands and all but I do it. I had the light popping off situation discussed, switched on and off and the bulb would come back on. Now, driver's side is always out. At dealer for service, wham, the bill above (which they discounted from about 3288). Ballast out. I've been trying to find a GOOD or actual video/instructional as to how to replace a ballast MYSELF. I can't justify a nearly 3K investment in a singular function element providing light-not to sound like a goofball but that's a lot of cabbage. My brother's got an AMG Benzer drop top and has HID's. He overheard me talking to my Dad and said LED conversions are cheaper and would be 2 new lights.
HELP guys! Wife is angry at the expense (plus I'm just filing my '16 taxes NOW and haven't started '17)...
Any links, hints, ideas, suggestions or instructionals and suppliers of LED conversions or how-to's for the ballast on the Driver's side would be appreciated unbelievably by this Lexus nut.

i think you can get prius ballast used, on ebay for around $50, and then DIY by removing bumper and removing the whole headlight unit itself and replace it,
it might be a lot of work, might want to shop around indy shop for second opinion

Factory HID parts are never cheap, no matter where you get them from, but @Brabusx2 is right - if you can do the swap yourself you will save a ton.
That just leaves you with needing to find some ballasts - we carry D4S Denso Ballasts that might be what you're looking for.

If you’re comfortable removing the bumper you shouldn’t have much of a hard time swapping the ballasts.
Just have to make sure to find some quality ones.
Here’s a DIY:

Here’s an example of a remanufactured ballast:

Of course OEM is going to be significantly more:

I was in a similar diilema like you, from the Dealer get a new MarkLevinson amplifier for $2850 plus taxes and labor, or buy a used one (guaranteed to work) on Ebay for $180. Guess which option I took.
