RX450H whoop noise right before gas engine turns
#16
I was finally able to replicate the noise when dropping off the vehicle for the "Intelligent Sonar Reprogramming" recall. The tech said he had never heard that noise before. At first they were worried it was the hybrid battery (plates rubbing/vibrating against each other). They had a specialist come out to inspect and they determined that it is the FUEL PUMP (which is located right under the hybrid battery). They've ordered the part and will replace... Hope this helps you all with the problem.

Sorry for the extremely late response but the noise RETURNED. So starting to think this is just something we have to live with. Our warranty expires 2021 or 50K miles so.... let's see if it's fixed by then..

Our 17' makes the same noise. It started around 10k miles.
The fuel pumps in these Hybrids are noisy. Along with the 'whoop' we get a LOT of vibration noise in temps around 0F and colder when the engine is operating at low speed. It's the fuel pump, I've been told it's normal, and it's been verified other units (even brand new ones on the lot) make the same noise. I find it extremely irritating but short of getting a different car I'm not sure what can be done unless Lexus redesigns the pump.
Doesn't seem to impact drivability.
