LS600HL DIY Hybrid Battery replacement(using Prius cells)
#76
Hi @Bigsk8r
Thanks for the info regarding the difference in model year, I am sure my design can cover both model year no problem.
Regarding the Dr. Prius App, the Android version does have the logging feature, simply click on the red recording button and everything will be stored into a CSV, once you've done recording, you can share the CSV file by email or send to other Apps. FYI.

@Bigsk8r as to why the 2008 are the most common 600h's. The first year was the only year dealers got allotments. As in Lexus allowed dealers to get them from Lexus to put them on their lots. I suspect because of the 2008 financial crash Lexus changed the 600h ordering policy for 2009 through 2016 so that only CUSTOMERS could order the 600h spec. So if you have a 2009 - 2016 600h that means the person ordering it had to know about it, order it without driving one, and pay the $120,000+ for the privilege of owning the vehicle. I'm not sure anyone has the exact numbers but I'd suspect they only sold maybe 500 or so 600h's per year from then on. The 2008 production number probably equals all of the 2009 - 2016.

Whatever ended up happening regarding the several loose ends? @jacktherip are there lithium batteries available for the 600h? @Bigsk8r how did your battery issue work out?
Here we go...
Dec 29, 2022 - Visited GreenTec Auto in Dallas. Met with Alex Russel, shop manager. He took the car into the shop, ran diagnostics and reported Code P0A70 which is battery reaching end of life. This matches the code that I saw on several occasions.
Dec 29, 2022 - Contacted GreenTec's main number and spoke with Heidi to get a quotation. Made a deposit on the call. Received SO1059 on 12/30.
Jan 10, 2023 - Drove to GreenTec in Dallas after being notified that the battery had arrived for install. About 30 minutes into the install, Alex came to me and said "We have a problem". Indeed we did. The battery sent was a 2008 model and my car is a 2011 model. They are physically very different with the 2010 and later version being MUCH larger.
Jan 30, 2023 - Drove back to Dallas after second battery was scheduled to arrive and dropped car off.
Feb 2, 2023 - Picked car up in the afternoon. Alex stated that they had to remove the AC, so the freon had been re-charged. That evening while parked, but idling, errors were thrown again. This time P0A80... low voltage.
Feb 5, 2023 - Drove car to airport on 75 degree day. AC did not work, and the batteries were running 110 degrees and higher. Not safe for them. Greentec agreed to cover AC purge and recharge once we decide battery status.
Feb 13, 2023 - Spoke with Alex. He and lead Tech in KC agreed that the data I provided (as well as the error code) were strongly indicating that the pack needs higher voltage cells. Decision made to replace the cells in my old battery with higher capacity cells and replace the battery on - or after - Feb 27.
March 8, 2023 - Returned to Dallas. Alex installed the new battery and we drove the car to an A/C specialist to have the A/C checked and the system flushed and re-charged.
Present Day - I have put approximately 8,000 miles on the car in the 107 days since I received the final invoice. In that time, there have been no codes, the battery has been noticeably stronger (especially at the odd time I go to full Sport mode), and the A/C blows very cold, even on 100+ degree Texas days.
Some misc. notes on this...
My car went 11 years, and 175,000 miles before ever reporting a battery related code. I find this to be remarkable. As well, my net out of pocket due to repeated trips from Austin to Dallas was near $7000. I could (maybe should?) have had Lexus of Austin or Lakeway do a Lexus battery for $8500 or so. As I just want to get 3 - 4 more years out of this car and GreenTech provides a 3 year warranty, I was content to go that route. Having said that, I was surprised that they had never seen a 2010 or later model and were unaware of the battery difference which caused a lot of on-the-fly engineering.
Bottom line... If I had a GreenTech near me, I would do this again knowing what I know now. As it is with them being in Dallas and not Austin, I would just go with Lexus despite the cost difference.
Cheers!
