Just to keep the thinking straight, it is a not an auto-transmission in the hybrid. Very different beast.

Change your fluid every 50,000 miles on the transaxle and it should outlast the car. It is called a power transfer unit by Toyota and only has one gear.
Changing the fluid is very simple and inexpensive. As easy as changing your engine oil.
You open the fill plug first to be sure it can be removed.
Then open the drain plug and about 3.5 to 4 quarts of Toyota WS ATF will drain out.
Replace the drain plug and use a new washer if you want.
To refill it you need a $6 fluid transfer pump to get the fluid out of the bottles and into the unit.
Fill until it flows out the fill hole then close it up.
My hybrid HS250 has had about 3 of these changes in 96,000 miles and runs great. It has the same design unit but smaller for the 4 cylinder motor.

Just wanted to add that we shouldn’t assume there was anything shady. If anyone would know what broke it’s the dealer.
I would actually be glad they found the true source of the issue and fixed the car completely for you. Like OP said, it’s worth the investment in this market and knowing the car was well maintained through its ownership.
The transaxle is very unique to Toyota Hybrids also known as an eCVT - super interesting design for anyone curious. Don’t get confused by CVT name, it has nothing in common with traditional CVTs like Nissan, Subaru, etc. Like others have mentioned it uses very few gears and two motor generators (MG1 and MG2) to drive the wheels and do it seamlessly and efficiently.
