Default 300h mileage in low speed

Folks! I am a recent 2022 GX460 owner considering a hybrid. We live in a university town where max speed is 40kmph(km not miles yes!) Would a 2022 300h give better mileage when driven at this speed for most part? I am considering a fuel efficient second car and wonder if 300h could pull off more than 24km/l if driven at this speed.

Please share your experience. Thank you.

100% absolutely. Hybrids excel in slower speed and city driving. Don't expect full EV driving the whole time but yes absolutely it will drive in EV mode well past 40 km/h and get you amazing fuel economy.

Side question, if you care about fuel economy why did you buy a GX460?

I agree. This is the kind of speed where hybrids perform at their peak economy.

Thank you for your reassuring reply.

Oh as for the GX, it was a no brainer- I live in Saudi, weekend getaways are usually about long drives(2-3 hrs minimum), plenty off roading to campsites n farms, need to tow a few dirt bikes to dunes 4-5 months a year, and occasional need for 7 seats. Plus Lexus comparatively has better post sales service here. Highway economy is pretty decent(under 11l every 100kms). Plus I talked my wife out of her admiration for RX with numbers - GS is 1 cm shorter and less wider than an RX.

Second car is to offset the fuel consumption by adding another fuel efficient Lexus that can be passed on to a few generations. Also considering Mini Countryman plugin. Nippy and fun but wary of the reliability issues it comes with.

Kind of a silly question: Shouldn't fuel economy be irrelevant in Saudi Arabia (source of most of worlds Oil)?

It used to be long ago, not anymore. As of today 30th March a liter is US$ .621 that is US$2.351 a gallon. Yes, about 8 years ago it used to be cheaper than a bottle of water. Motivation to add a hybrid is not entirely for price though.

It must have been at least 10-15 years since we had those prices in Canada. At those prices everyone was buying big has guzzlers here.

At the moment average gas in Canada is $1.52 USD per liter which is $5.75 per US gallon.

now a Hybrid has lead time of 6 month to over a year, when you can buy the gas version of the same car with lead time of about 2-3 months and few thousands cheaper.

All my best MPG runs of ALL my hybrids have involved long distance highway cruising. =) In my CT i'd do multiple 53-55mpg long distance long highway runs, in the ES, i've done multiple long distance highway trips @ 50-53mpg averaging about 70. i wrote a page on the CT forums and I think recycled it here for driving trips for hybrids. check it out.
