Default First day with my NX 350h and some early issues

I picked up my NX 350h executive package yesterday and have only about 1.5 hours of driving experience thus far. It's been ... interesting.

Orientation was ridiculously limited covering almost nothing of the vehicle's operation other than getting the Lexus app more or less functioning (no test/practice drive). It is not a good sign when the technical assistant is unable to connect to a critical setup link on either my Android or my wife's Apple phone using either wi-fi or data connection and using 3 different browsers (lexus.app.link/xxxxxx). She eventually succeeded using her own phone, much valuable orientation time lost in the process.

My phone (Samsung S10) only occasionally connects automatically through Bluetooth and trying to do so manually is not always possible either. Perhaps something to do with my wife's phone (and associated keyfob) also being in the car at the time? Neither of our profiles load consistently either, so "guest" is the usual driver. My phone not being connected seems to be related to the following error whenever _any_ voice command is attempted "Sorry, the network is currently busy. Please try again later." So I really need to know if a connected smartphone is necessary in order for any voice command to work??

The wireless charger has worked for about 30 seconds in total. My phone does have a very thin protective sleeve on it but has never failed to charge perfectly wiith any of a dozen wireless chargers.

Using the Lexus navigation has resulting in several really strange errors. Twice (in different areas) I've been shown a direct route to my destination with the exception of a totally bizarre short detour. For example, travelling straight along the correct street I'm told to make a 90 degree turn and proceed a short distance on that road, make a U-turn and then return to my original correct route. I've been using GPS navigation for 30 years and never encountered anything like it. Beautiful responsive display aside, I think I'll be sticking to Google Maps whenever Android Auto successfully connects.

I have lots of questions regarding the HUD functionality but those are slowly being answered as I experiment while driving. Things that should be really simple like changing the adaptive cruise control speed and following distance are definitely possible but the procedure to do so is not consistent - I must be inadvertently changing the Mode or something so I'm going to need more practice here.

I enjoyed Lane Trace assist a lot (first time I've driven a car with that feature) until the sun began to set and the lane markings became less clear. Then the car seemed confused as to where it should be steering. Lane Trace Assist did not display any warning and did not shut off. I might have been imagining things here.

Unfortunately my wife, for whom the vehicle was primarily purchased for, has been too scared to drive it yet.

Congrats on our 350H and at first the new features could be a little overwhelming.

I have some videos explaining features and I am an owner of a 450h+

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC2I...zVD1Yi3codlh9g

There are 2 videos from Northside video that show every feature. You should look them up.

Thanks lsft, your many videos have and will be very useful to me. I have also gone through those 2 tutorials recently but will need to do so again now that I have the vehicle in front of me. Have you ever heard of the "network is currently busy" message when using voice commands?

Ya even at delivery, the rep told me to not have two key fobs and profiles in car at same time if I can help it since it'll mess up the car not knowing which profile to load.

LKA will have the icon (with green edges lit) if it can work , otherwise, the green edges won't show and it's just regular adaptive cruise. But generally yes in darkness and/or inclement weather, LKA may not work and you have to pay attention to see the green edges are solid to know it's on. But for exits and large intersections where the lanes aren't marked, it can have issues so be careful

I've seen it before. It's annoying - I think Lexus needs to upgrade the infrastructure of the system. There are times the same command will work, sometimes it will give you they don't understand and some times it will have network is currently busy. One thing you may want to check out is the Lexus Interface and if there is an update. There was an update late March, but I have heard folks are still needing to update it when vehicles were delivered last month. So do check out the software update video and see if you have the latest version. That may solve some connectivity issues.

I got the march update (well it was applied when car delivered in May) but last week I got another update... not sure what that addressed though

And by the time you spend all that time with your eyes on the dash trying to focus on the tiny little indicators you need lane assist to be working because you're not watching the road.

If you goto the software update section, it tells you history of what was updated and you can see the versions of each component, maybe you can share.

Yesterday involved a 6 hour trip back home from the dealership with about 6 stops/restarts along the way. The NX rode great, it's very quiet and comfortable and the ML sound system is the best I've ever heard. But this thread isn't really about that.

Only my phone (Samsung S10 Note+) and keyfob were in the car (and, no, I do not run a VPN on my phone). There are no software updates available on the car but my delearship tells me there is a brand new small update they could now install but that will have to wait a month for when I'm back in town. I guess over-the-air updates are only for the major updates.

The day before while mostly testing the car in a driveway, it had worked perfectly, immediately loading my phone and profile. But during this trip, it was pretty much the opposite. I only wish I had taken detailed notes...So no way can I coherently describe all that didn't work right but roughly in those 6 start/stops, the infotainment might have worked one time as it should. When I began the trip is was almost impossible to get my phone to connect, the Lexus bluetooth setting on my phone would say connecting/connected but the car would say not connected. After many, many tries including reboots of both phone and infotainment, what finally seemed to allow me to connect was changing the phone setting toggle (on the car) from Android Auto to Phone/Media. I should probably note here that I regularly connect this phone via Bluetooth with my other two vehicles (Ford) without problems and both also work fine with Android Auto. I had thought Bluetooth connectivity with vehicles was a proven technology, not so with this Lexus.

During the rest of the trip, maybe 3 times the phone connected after manually selecting it in Settings but my profile did not load. Once I was asked to enter the passcode for my profile. Also as it stands right now, it looks like both mine and my wife's profiles have completely disappeared. I guess I should delete the whole mess and start the process again from scratch as a new user. My wife is not a technical person, and if these issues extend to her iPhone, she might never be able to use her phone in this car.

The "network is currently busy, try again later" error message when using voice commands seems to be a big problem. Essentially in any significant urban area most voice commands throughout the day resulted in this "network busy" error. Once outside those areas, the voice command always worked as it should other than once when I received a different error message in response to a voice command, something to the effect that the network failed to function. Seems to me this mystery Lexus network (the technical specialist did not know what cell carrier Lexus uses in Canada) might currently be borderline useless in any City I'm likely to travel in.

I had a USB stick containing music plugged in but it would not be detected as a music source when I restarted the car. Manually removing and reinserting it allowed it be recognized again. However, once I shut off the car with music playing from the USB stick and it continued to play automatically when I restarted the car. Perhaps normal operation?

I was impressed by the Lexus app capabilities but it too can't be entirely trusted. I've left the car unlocked intentionally but the app says it is "Closed and Locked". After about 10 minutes I did get a "driver-side door unlocked" notification. All of the doors were actually unlocked.

Regarding the compass function in the HUD (visible only in the "Full" display): I could have sworn it simply does not work because the arrow always points North regardless of actual travelling direction yet there was one 20 minute span in which it _did_ work correctly. Very fitting considering how inconsistently the infotainment functions.

In the good news department, my phone did charge at least some of the time and I figured out my steering wheel button issues. Turns out my problem was not understanding there's a fundamental difference between capacitive touch changing the HUD display and tactile button presses that actually invoke the highlighted command. Duh.

Questions:
Why am I always being asked if I want to change my seat position (Yes/No) when/if my profile loads?
Buried deep in the Lexus app is a "Lexus Brand Engagement Center" 1-800 number - is this who I should call to ask about my technical issues?

@Susido That's a frustrating experience that I hope you can resolve. If it were me I would watch those 2 video @lsft posted and reformat your NX and start from scratch. I have no issues to speak of with my 450H. There are times when it confuses who the driver is but that's when the driver isn't the first one to open the car door. As for your phone have you slid in the charging tray? This works for both of our phones.

There is lots of room for improvement with the app.

I know the carrier is not Rogers. Last time when Rogers was down, the data continue to work.

We have most or all of the same issues you've seen, and unfortunately they're 'normal' for this car at this time. Still bugs or design flaws, and I'd encourage you to call (and have some patience with) and report the issues clearly to the Lexus Brand folks as dealers can't really solve these kinds of issues. I'm hopeful with enough pressure from customers Lexus will address most of them.
  • The app accuracy for vehicle status is horrible and you can't count on it. This is actually surprising to me as I have a different model 2018 Lexus and we've owned many recent Lexus cars including an NX and the previous version of the app (although basic) properly showed the vehicle status. In this app, even refreshing the screen doesn't always work and I've got screen shots and photos of the car with completely different app info vs. reality that I'm planning on sending in to Lexus.
  • The steering buttons are somewhat annoying, light touch to 'activate' then touching again doesn't always work, I find I now basically double click a button slowly mostly which seems to do the trick.
  • I'm in the States and rural, same issues with 'system busy' or various other ways of telling me the connection isn't up to voice commands...very frustrating. I also seem to get 'I can't understand you right now' even when I think I've been clear, which may also be a limited network error. I wish they had imbedded some more functions in the car vs. relying on network access which is spotty at best in my general area
  • Speaking of network, the profile design is poor, they've done an update, but it still struggles. It seems to give preference to the last person it recognized, so I'm seeing more often issues with my wife getting in (her car) after I've driven, or vice versa. What I've found to help:
    • I removed our phones as identifiers/links to our profile...they're now simply bluetooth devices that connect if our profile is recognized. Instead, I deleted all key fobs/phones attached to each profile, then linked one unique key fob to each profile keeping the other key fob (and key card) far, far, away while doing so. I did this a while ago and it seemed to reduce the problems. My profile almost always loads now even if my wife gets in with her key fob into the passenger seat.
    • Having the driver unlock the car seems to also help, but this isn't always easy to coordinate
    • Pausing for a second to see which profile loaded is important, as Lexus removed the ability to change profiles while driving. I color coded each profile with a different color, so its easy to immediately see who got loaded. If not, you switch manually.
    • Wiping everything and starting over clean isn't a bad idea.
  • For your USB music source, how have you formatted the drive and how did you organize the music? I believe you must use FAT32 with no more than a 64gb drive for it to be recognized. I use a software that takes my playlists and writes the mp3s in separate folders per playlist and renames the files to include a sequential #...and for good measure writes them on the drive in that order. This lets me play playlists in the order I expect using the folder browse function. The drive is also recognized properly, but I leave it plugged in. Lexus hasn't handled music on drives well for years now.

Appreciate the advice ct6978. It's disappointing these issues are widespread but also surprising. In particular, the network congestion issue, if indeed that is the issue, I hadn't even seen mentioned here before and the Lexus dealership technical specialist claimed to have never heard of it.

I'm going to try to remove my phone as a profile identifier, though not sure how to do that.

The USB stick is standard FAT32, 16 GB size. No problem with the directory structure as the infortainment displays the contents fine. It's just a minor annoyance compared to everything else.

Does your compass direction arrow work as it should?

Random thought: Do you have a radar detector or tollroad payment device or anything like that attached to the windshield or atop the dashboard? The constellation of issues you report, especially the compass issue, suggest that something could be getting between your car's telematics and the outside world. (About a year ago, we had serious navi-system issues with my wife's RX350 until we realized that a radar detector was mounted in a sensitive location on the windshield.)

Interesting idea but no, nothing at all like that installed.
