Default Longevity of Traction Battery

Hello everyone,

I wanted to find out how many clublexus members are currently still using their original traction battery on their Lexus RX450h and what mileage they have on their RX450h. I currently have two 2011 Lexus Rx450h's that are on their original Lexus RX450h traction batteries. The first RX450h has 161K and the second RX450h has 126K miles on the odometer. I have had the 12V battery replaced on both vehicles. I am just starting to investigate options for replacing the traction battery once the original traction battery dies out. I currently have found a national battery shop called Greentechauto in Clearwater, FL and another local hybrid battery shop in Brooksville, FL. Replacement traction battery links are listed below:

2010 original a lot of things, but specifically 12v and traction are both original. We just turned over 200k miles.

Wow, a traditional Lead Acid 12v battery lasted 12 years! As you all likely know,
the Toyota/Lexus warrantee on Hybrid batteries was extended from the 8 year/100K mile
to 10 year/150K mile period starting with the 2020 model year. This covers both the
Nickel Metal Hydride that has been fitted since the original Prius and the newer models
that come with the Lithium configuration.

I have 140K miles on mine. Traction battery, and 12V battery are original. the battery performance has degraded a bit but not to a point where I need a new one.

Hello,
I did a change last year at 160K Km. The car is from 2012 year.
I went with OEM battery.

It’s not so much the miles. It’s the time. They will last 10 to 15 years. None of this generation has hit the 15 year mark yet.

That's a first. Time, you say? Not charge/recharge cycles??? Can you point to some info resources on this?

I agree with @703 that time is a big factor.

341,000 mile Prius below with original hybrid battery - but it's only a 2019, so leads me to believe mileage isn't as big of a factor as time.

I'm going to chime in with a "none of the above". Heat is the real killer. Hot heat, the worse kind. Charge/discharge cycles (which can be equated to mileage) is not really a big issue because these batteries don't go thru complete charge/discharge cycles. The amount of charge/discharge allowed by the vehicle compared with maximum rated battery capacity is very small (the in-vehicle battery charge displays don't show the rated battery capacity, only the small range in which the battery is allowed to cycle). Time, well that implies that just sitting there does damage. Aside from the fact that NiMH do have a self-discharge rate which is easily overcome by an occasional charge (ie start the car). But heat, yes, the heat is what is going to not only reduce effectiveness, but also risk over pressuring the cells. There is a reason the battery pack has quite large vent motors in them that can draw nice A/C cooled air (in theory on super hot days) from the cabin. Not sure if anyone has ever heard these vent motors gong full blast (I used an ODB tool to command them to full speed just to see), they sound like a hurricane is under the back seat.

Heat is the killer only in the extremes, as with all batteries. Mileage is the killer only in the extremes.

Age of the battery is what you should go by.

I believe the true limitation with these vehicles is everything “other” than the main traction battery.

Major suspension components, exhaust/emissions, engine, major braking/anti-lock components, and rust will more likely diminish the useful longevity of these hybrids.

Even then, most of the “others” mentioned above have a surprisingly great reliability/longevity history so far.

The first thing that non-hybrid driver/owners seem to ask is “just wait till that expensive battery needs replacement”.

I tell them, it’s the last thing I’m worried about.

Wife's 2010 RX450h just hit 260k miles on the original traction battery. We were prepared to replace it around 200k but it's still going strong.

we are flipin odometar almost 330 000 km on 2010 rx450h model.our routine is that we clean every month 3 went ports under rear seat to keep cold air intake free of any dust or debri monitoring temperature on all 3 cooling fans inside hybrid battery to be within 5 deg of difference between them ising dr prius app and very nice obd linx blue tooth reader super fast from ebay or amazon. and recharging AGM battery from time to time with slow trickle charger schumacher .one time small battery 12 v was replaced because remember all your acessories running of that small battery .only problem now is how to replace last 2 spark plugs which heat recovery unit is covering .we posted thread with that issue and looking forward to solve it soon.
