Ok another question - anyone have pics of where they put their remote module for their Escort 8500 or V1 detectors??? I'm trying to get some ideas here....

I was thinkin of putting it on the steering column but then realized it would be in direct view if a cop pulled me over and well that can't be good if he knows what it is........

The Best buy guys are right, you can use regular phone line. I've got an older 8500 (not the new X50 ) and I've had it hard wired to my motorcycle with an old phone cord for a couple of years now. Works fine. There are 4 conductors in the Escort's Smart Plug, the two inner ones carry the 12V power and ground while the two outer ones communicate to the Smart Plug. If you are hard wiring you can ignore the outer contacts/conductors. I can't remember the polarity of the inner contacts but you can plug in your smart cord and figure it out using a volt meter.

Make sure you buy phone cord that has four conductors. The cheap single line cords have only two conductors. You need a phone wire that is for two line phones and actually has all four wires connected to the connector.

If you look at a clear connector you will see four different color wires through it. This way you know for sure if the phone wire is a four conductor. Colors are red, black, yellow, green, but not neccessarily in that order.

There's some cheap wire out there, so you might just get what you pay for !

Wait but I thought only two of the wires are for power and two are for the smart cord. So if i'm doing a direct hard wire without the smart card I only need a two wire phone cord right?

I will have to defer to the Escort experts to confirm what you are asking.

I only went by what wjbertrand said about what the 4 wires do. I don't have knowledge of the Escort wiring set up, since I use a Valentine One. From what you are saying, the other two wires are not utilized in your particular set up, so you may be correct that the other two are not needed.

It is likely that the 4 conductor wire is almost the same price as a two conductor. It wouldn't hurt anything to just by a four conductor.

Well wjbertrand said the two inner wires provide power while the other two communicate with the smart plug....hmmm i think i'm making this more difficult than it really is!!! hahaha

hey RRMGS4 much props on your V1 stealth install by the way - that thing is sweeeeeet!!!!

All,

If you are hard wiring, then you won't be using the smart plug, therefore you do not need the two outer conductors and all you need is two conductor phone wire. I know 'cause that's exactly how I wired mine. Usually the 2-conductor wire has the wires/contacts located in the inner positions, which is where you need them to power the Passport. Using four conductor wire won't hurt anything, it's just not necessary. Just don't hook the out wires up to anything!

That was an interesting project, horay for me for shorting out and blowing a fuse that sets off the CE and flashing trac, hahhaha. Anyways, we couldn't get the 2 wire one to work for us, so we got a 4, and essentially did the same thing, but it worked this time. Who, knows? And we were able to reset the ecu and remove the CE light. Short of a few scares, it was a pretty clean and easy install, even ran the wire through the rear view mirror base into the headlinder, instead of next to it like mine.
