S-AFC Illegal/Won't Pass Smog in Cali?
Does anyone know? Lexus tech yesterday mentioned anything that manipulates the timing on a car would be considered illegal.
So I'm also asking, are aftermarket cam gears illegal in Cali as well? Will that cause a fail on smog?
I'm just planning ahead.
Thx guys.

Just make sure you hide your S-AFC when you smog. Even though it's a tool, it will make you fail visual and it alters your factory emissions equipment in a way. If you set the settings to factory, you shouldn't have a problem with CO2 and HC readings .
Someone correct me if i'm wrong.

Thanks Ryan.
Yeah, so if others have input on this, please chime in on both the S-AFC and Cam Gear...I would imagine both would cause a fail if seen on visual. And couldn't the adjustable cam gear throw off emissions enough to create a variance on the sniffer test?

It's almost like the ECU is struggling against other readings. The car feels like it's being "manipulated" like you can through cruise control to slow the car down or as if the brakes were being applied suddenly.

Furthermore, my S-AFC is still in an "un-tuned" mode as I'm trying to find a good Dyno Tuner in the Bay Area (I'm in the East Bay but open to suggestions)...bchauGT gave me some names and alot are in the South Bay or Sac. Open to recommendations on those too if anyone has some. Dyno Labs over here is AWOL now it seems.

SAFC does NOT control or change timing.
It may alter the A/F ratio enough to change your emissions gasses, but in reality it would produce less smog as less fuel is being burned. (unless you are adding fuel across the NE point range)
As for the cam gear, most find that retarding the timing slightly does the most in terms of HP gains.
In essence, it holds the burnt fuel in the cylinder longer, thus raise the pressure (as related to compression) and puts more force on the piston stroke. This is where the HP gain comes from.
I wouldn't think it would affect your emissions, but don't take my word as gospel.
