How to e-shift?

Ok I've never driven a manual before so don't get mad at me. But I was wondering what were the benefits to using e-shift, and how do you know when to shift up or down? Do you shift at certain mph or rpm or just listen and gauge the engine or what? The latter is pretty difficult though since the engine is pretty quiet and you can't hear it at all when you're blasting a cd. Thanks for any input!

You just got to get used to it.
If you need to slow down/accelerate, then down-shift.
For acceleration, push the gas pedal.
To go back to cruising, upshift.
Normally, you would keep your car in 5 (same as D.)
The e-shift in our cars is far away from manual (auto down-shift and inability to select 1st gear, lack of clutch), so you'll be able to learn easily. Just play with it.
Basically, to know what gear to select, look at the tachometer. 3 K RPM is just about normal. 800-1000 RPM is low. Above 3 K is for accelearation/engine braking.

Here's something funny. When I bought the IS one of the draws was the ability to use the e-shift. I told myself that I would use e-shift almost exclusively (my previous car had a 5-speed manual).
However, now I find myself so lazy and rely more on "D" or dummy mode. The funny thing is that my wife (it's her car) uses e-shift almost exclusively and does not ever drive in "D". When we got the car she said she would be glad to just stick it in drive and go.
Talk about role reversals.

I use e-shift for going up and down steep hills and on winding roads where I want more control and don't want to hit the brakes a lot. It's also nice to be able to lock it in second gear when traffic is crawling. That way, it doesn't shift between 2nd and 3rd all the time. Warning: using e-shift all the time will be detrimental to your fuel consumption rate.
