Exclamation 2003 IS300 Manual OverDrive?? Speed to RPM ratio?

I recently bought a 2003 Is300 manual. I took it out on the highway for the first time yesterday and I was a little concerned about the RPM that the car was running at in 5th gear. I was going about 80 mph and was at 3400 RPM. Is this NORMAL?? Does the car have Overdrive? please respond....I am so confused yet curious to c whether or not this is normal.

yup - that's normal
(part of the reason why we get so-so gas mileage)

Red face is it bad?

Idk....it just seemed not normal...this is my first manual transmission car andi didnt know....but is it bad to run your car at such high RPM on the highway. I mean....i think that 3400 is a bit high?!......isnt it?...any1 else with a manual IS300 experience the same thing at around 80 mph?

yes only on is300 so we get more aggressive acceleration and suck fuel efficiency. most car will be at around 3000-3200 range i think

the 2jz-ge engine is a high rev engine, so it's fine. yes that's about the right rpm, it's no problem

Several persons have old cars from the starting of the 2000's around me. Many japanese and corean cars share this specific thing, that they will rev high at normal speed. The Kia Ceed of my mother is around 3'800 RPM at 120 km/h. The Toyota Yaris TS of Steeve also revs high on the highway, so that he needs to reduce his speed voluntarly at 100 km/h, so that the rpm stay in a more comfy zone.

The IS300 automatic of mine is also idling at 2'850 / 2'900 RPM at 120 km/h. It's not uncommun or extreme for european/asian cars.

Now, with turbo, big torque and 8 speed automatic/CVT, the problem seems solved (not reliability nor fuel consumption though). Many engines don't even reach 2'000 rpm on the highway nowadays.

Default Rpm

This is exactly normal rpm at 80mph

That's one reason I'm selling my car.

Not great mpg...

the is300 isn't the only car with a gearbox like that, I believe the 240sx is the same way . you get used to it honestly, and believe it or not you can get some decent gas mileage still but obviously not as good.

Its also a pretty high rev engine, now don't go banging gears hitting the rev limiter lol I hear the w55 is a glasshouse. mine has been great aside from the clunky characteristics that it has. make sure you run that redline in it .
