ive heard of this problem on a lot of ISs dash. all years except for the 2001s which come painted from the factory. a lot of guys are painting their dash to get rid of the stickiness.

Well for people with melty dashes you have no choice but to grease it.

Persons who have perfect dashes don't understand and whine at people using the grease. OK, YOU take the melty dash and lets see if you grease it or not after a week of staring at it.

I have fortunately found a pretty good balance.

On JUST the airbag (where most people have melty dash) use this: http://www.acehardware.com/product/i...LAID=143758728

Then on the rest of the dash for a low gloss that won't bling like a grease but blends into the airbag use this: http://www.pronto.com/stp-tires-and-wheels-da0sj

You'll get a balanced, low gloss satin finish without a big pool of grease and it'll look like nothing is wrong.

So this happened in all years from 2002 on in the IS300? If it did not happen in 2001 will the '01 dash work in an '02?

The 01 was painted, the 02+ was "coated".

Its not that its "melting", the material just becomes a sticky/gooey mess. You cant even touch it without leaving a permanent mark. Anyway, since i am far out of warranty, i am looking for alternatives. Probably going to end up pulling the entire dash apart and getting it bead blasted and painted....
Hell yeah couldnt agree more. my Friends IS is starting to have that same issue. I just bought a IS today I Hope I dont encounter this issue.

FYI folks ...

I JUST started having this problem as well and it is JUST the air bag lid section of the dash that is affected....nothign ele..... yet.....

My car is a one owner car and has been in the sun alot over the last 8 + years it can get hot here for sure but for most of it' life o nthe road it has been in underground parking.....so not as if it has lived outsoide for 8 years plus....
Just last weekend i noticed this tacky mess on the airbag lid..... & i immediately thought of this thread.

I havent finished reading the posts but i will and hopefully someone has a decent solution... I am obviously not warrantied any more but from the sound of things Lexus could give a crap about this problem and is offering no support at all if you are out of warranty.

Pretty ridiculous when it is a common problem with 6-7 year old cars and ocurs even in areas that are not easily wiped by some mysterious dash eating chemical that apparently only they know exists ....but cannot name specifically.....

...what B a s t a r d s!
