So Im wanting to change my stock radio/cd player to an aftermarket head unit... When we took it somewhere for them to install the head unit I want to put in, they kept adding all these extra charges for antenna adapters and something to by-pass the factory amp. We ended up not having them install it.
My question is... Is this necessary? Cant you usually just change the head unit much easier?! I have never heard of these other things they are talking about so just wanted to ask someone else! Im used to just getting a dash kit for it and putting it in... Any info would help! Thanks.
* I just realized I should have posted this in the audio section! But I am still looking for any information or threads on this topic *

This depends on the car. I know that you will need a mounting kit as you stated and Metra now makes a wiring harness for the car which you should use for ease of install. An antenna adapter is not uncommon at all for install on an aftermarket radio.
Here is the link to what wiring harness is need. It is in the My.IS forum along with a DIY for your reference.
