to say the truth i was actually going 25-35 mph because of the heavy rain, i hit a pot hole in the ground and just spun like crazy

Cars loose one drop of oil each every day (average approximation) and if your region of the world doesn't get a lot of rain, the roads get a pretty big build up. When roads are dry the oil works its way into the pourous serface of the road, but then when it rains, the water (which is heavier than the engine oil) forces all the oil up out of the road serface. Therefore, oil sliks when it rains.

OP: good thing our cars are built like they are

TRAC is built in these cars for a reason. They are slick as ***** without it turned on. With it on, it's impossible within most situations to spin out.
