agreed. the manual in the IS is the W55 tranny used in other toyota cars during the late 80s. not considered very strong. generally if youre going boost you should probably consider either an auto or budget for a tranny swap to R154 or V160

off the top of my head the R154 can be found in the mk3 and a few jdm cars. Ie soarer chaser I think. The v160 is generally stronger but expensive and is found in the mk4s and some jdm cars I think the aristo but don't quote me on that

ok since you decided to flame my post i will say in more detail how my statement is completely accurate.
1st 350hp will be a good hp number for a 2JZ-GE simple turbo build. therefore the W55 will be fine
2nd If he buys a 5 speed he will not have to go through the hassle of converting his car to a manual if he decides to go with lets say a 2JZ-GTE with a V160 or V161. Even if he decides to really build his motor then a V160, V161, or a R154 can be swapped in much easier than it would be if he bought an automatic.

Your second point however does not in anyway support anything that was in your original post. Your first post in this thread is all opinion. I too think a manual is more fun however the fact remains that in order to get the most out of a STOCK IS transmission the appropriate choice would be to go with an auto and not a manual; and the reason is the material that the gears are manufactured of in the W55 is not strong enough and will break down. I have looked into every option for a stronger transmission for my turbo build. I have even spoken directly with SRT and when I told him what I purchased when I bought the car in June of 2006 they specifically stated that I bought the car with the wrong transmission, I should have gotten the one with an auto.
The purpose of the forums is to be informative when asked and opinionated when asked. Answering the question in the manner you did creates confusion because it is strictly opinion when fact was needed.
