lexus only made the manual in limited numbers. finding one may be difficult.
in your searches you want to look for years 2002 and up. in 2001 manual was not an option.
not sure what you mean by "is there a difference in auto or manual"

This is highly inaccurate! The auto is much stronger of a transmission and is better for turbo applications. This is not an opinion of mine but one of a highly recommended builder in Maryland that does quite a few turbo builds. The IS tranny in manual format can only handle about 350HP.

1st 350hp will be a good hp number for a 2JZ-GE simple turbo build. therefore the W55 will be fine
2nd If he buys a 5 speed he will not have to go through the hassle of converting his car to a manual if he decides to go with lets say a 2JZ-GTE with a V160 or V161. Even if he decides to really build his motor then a V160, V161, or a R154 can be swapped in much easier than it would be if he bought an automatic.

Good luck on the manual hunt! I searched for 6 months and found only 2 manuals and both of them were beat to hell. I desperately wanted a manual and ended up with an auto. I am still on the fence about whether I like the auto, but I know for a fact if I would have waited to find the right manual I would be very happy with it. So if its a manual you want wait it out! Its all about personal preference. One thing I would like to add though the auto helps me keep my foot out of it, a little bit (very little bit) haha!
