Hello all. Recently I have a slight interest in importing an Altezza from Japan. Anyone here rolling around in one? For those that do, did you import it, or bought it in the U.S. from someone who imported? Any ideas on what kind of paperwork/costs/messes I will have to deal with IF I do import one? Everyone's assistance is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

unless you have a letter from toyota saying that the structure is similar enough to meet US crash regulations AND another letter stating the engine you want to use will comply with all US regulations, then no, it won't be legal at all.
At least not for 25 years after the vehicle was introduced. at that point the NHTSA and ICE declare it (mostly) exempt from federal emissions and safety requirements, though it would still need to meet all State emissions laws (so no 3S Beams cars or 1JZ for CARB states.).
many people have vehicles of questionable legality, often saying they are legal because they are state registered and insured. THIS IS NOT TRUE (exactly). Just because a vehicle is state registered does not mean it was properly imported (through an RI) and has had compliance work. All it means is that the owner managed to convince the DMV to issue a plate and/or a vin for the car. Customs can still seize the car (even years later) as it was likely undeclared or illegal by staying past the show/compliance limit. the DOT/NHTSA can also seize the car as it won't meet federal safety/enviro laws.
if you see a car that claims to be legal, call the dot at 202 366 5291 and check the chassis/vin code and see if it is. Heck, tell the owner you plan to do so and see how willing he is to have the car looked in to...(number lifted from vehicleimport.blogspot.com) Asking for a DOT Bond Release isnt a bad idea either...
