Post 30k Maintenance

I drive my 01 IS300 on the weekends and I just hit 30k miles. The dealer wants $500.00 to do the 30k maintenance and I'm thinking for what? What are you guys being charged for this service, and how do you feel about this? Does anyone go some were different for there service?

I wonder if you would be able to take it to Toyota and get a cheaper service over there? If anyone knows someone at a Toyota dealer and can ask them if they could do this service?

at 30k you change your:
air filter
oil and filter
radiator fluid
brake fluid.

you might want to change the differential oil too.
also rotate your tires.

The toyota dealer I normally go to wouldn't work on lexus. (even though I bought my oil fiter and radiator fluid from them to service the IS).

I did almost everything myself and had the dealer change the brake fluid and differential fluid.
Changing the brake fluid was $75 and the diff oil was $45, but I get a free car wash and vacuum.

Ask the dealer to price out the 30k service for you. If they're charging you 50 bucks to change your air filter thats money easily saved right there. The air filter is really easy and takes literally 2 mins. Changing the oil is quite a bit more difficult (if you do go to a dealer for this, ask for the japanese production filter part#90915-YZZB9 its better than the US production one)

a lot of dealers charge for extra services that may be uncessary. An example would be one of the dealers wants to change the transmission fluid every 15k. If you have an e-shift, it says right on the tranny dipstick as well as the owners manual that the tranny fluid doen't need to be changed. also some dealers will add fuel additives and will charge an an arm and a leg for it. Also they'll charge you for washing and vacuuming your car (which they will do anyways whether you pay for it or not).

That's how they make their real money. The service department. They're hoping that your typical lexus owners would just drop off their car and just pay them without having to justify the cost.
