Default 2002 IS300 Sportcross - headlight problem

Hi -

I've gotten some very good info from this forum before, and I need it again please.

I have a 2002 IS300 Sportcross and the left front (driver) headlight (lowbeam, HID) has gone out.
I'm not sure when it happened as I don't drive much at night, but there has not been any 'trauma' to the car - no accidents, etc. that might have caused this.
In fact, it's garaged most of the time.

1) I have checked the bulb and it is good - I swapped it with the right front headlight and it works.
2) I bought new bulbs and tested - the new one worked on the right, not on the left.
3) I've checked the fuse under the hood - again, all good and swapped with right side to verify.
4) All the other lights work properly on both sides.

I'm guessing that there might be a secondary fuse, or perhaps a headlight 'module' somewhere that needs to be replaced?

Suggestions?

Hello,

HID, or High Intensity Discharge bulb doesn't work like a regular incandescent light, instead, it uses very high voltage (upwards of 2-3 kV) to discharge through inert gas, Xenon in this case, to create light. This kind of voltage doesn't happen at the battery, so any HID headlight will have its own Ballast to produce the voltage, and that is the most common weak point in those headlights.

The system has very high voltage, not enough to kill, but more than plenty to make up for a very bad day, so be extra careful while handling those headlights when they are powered, and do NOT try measuring the voltage at the ballast. If the headlight does get 12V in from the battery, and the light bulb does work, all that's left is said Ballast. Part Number for it is 81107-53040, here you an find one on sale.

Hope this helps and best of luck!

Think I figured it out by searching some other forums - it must be the ballast that's bad.

I'll try replacing it and see how it goes.

Yes, you need a replacement Denso ballast. Let us know how it goes!
