Engine soffocates throttle

Hello Folks,
I've been having this problem with my 2007 IS300 (136k miles, 3GR-FE engine) for quite a while now.
It happens when I quickly press the gas pedal (like trying to high-rev the engine) the engine "suffocates" for a split second then it responds fine.
It happens at idle as well as while moving. Except that while moving, the engine suffocates for a slightly longer period then accelerates fine.
It doesn't happen at a specific rpm only when I rev the engine.
No engine check light.
The engine has delayed startup time compared to what it used to be.
Fuel consumption has increased considerably.
Very rarely, engine knocking, and only one time it felt like the engine has backfired.
With engine check light coming on, I know those workshops will start the guessing work, and I don't want it to go south given the age of the car.
I will appreciate if someone can help with possible reasons of the above symptoms, and where can start if decide to diy it.
