Temporarily Lost Oil Pressure Knock/Click Sound (Damage?)
I have a 2006 JDM IS350. Lost oil while I was driving after placing the filter sealer in the wrong location. Lost a significant amount of oil while driving. Also heard a clicking/knocking type sound coming from the engine. There was a warning light that came on but I didn't know what it was since my car is JDM so the message was in Japanese. The dealership checked the engine and didn't find any issue. Minor bore scoring in the compression chamber but nothing atypical for the age. The mechanic told me that the probable explanation was VVT system was temporarily starved of oil which is where the noise came from.
My question is: should I be worried about premature wear in the VVT system? It only made that harsh noise for a split second. Are the VVT systems fairly sturdy?

Short of dismantling the engine there is no way to know exactly how much damage there is, if any. Take a look at the oil filter element see if there are any metal particles.

Good sign. Do you still have the old oil? If so sent it off to Blackstone Labs.

As stated, not much way of knowing anything without an thorough inspection.
Several warning messages likely came up and may be stored in the ECU if you have a code reader.
Low oil volume.
Followed by low oil pressure, and likely VVT-i messages to the effect of cam timing bank 1 bank 2 intake and exhaust...
How long did it run when the first Red Triangle light came on?
