Default Question about oil consumption for a 2009 IS350

Greetings to all and Merry Christmas !
I have a general question: I have a 2009 Lexus IS350 with 130K miles on it and I just noticed that it appears to slightly consume oil, but I do not see any spots under the car , nor I feel a oil-burn smell, the question is: is it normal at this mileage? According to the common wisdom, about what mileage do they start consuming oil? Car is in very good shape otherwise. Pls advise. Thank you !

My IS350 also has a similar leak and when taking it in for an oil change, Toyota informed me that I had some sort of leak (rear main seal? can't remember). The technician told me it wouldn't be worth it to fix because of how minor it is vs the cost to fix it and said to just keep an eye on oil levels. 30k miles later and the car still runs fine.

No, not running hard and usually this car does trips between 3-15 miles, but we have not taken it out of town in a long while.
But we do not beat it to the local community store all the time. Thank you !

I had about a quart of consumption every OCI (5k miles) around your mileage. I'm now at 215k and I was going through 2 quarts every OCI, but I did notice the banjo bolts for the oil lines were leaking pretty bad so I changed the gaskets (so far it seems to have lessened quite a bit). I would change your PCV valve if you have never done that as it's the first place to usually check.

To be fair, it's a high mileage car. Seals and stuff age and start to dry out. Piston return holes may be a tad bit clogged depending on oil quality/OCI. Just about every car will start having some oil consumption around that mileage. Your driving patterns will also have some effect, a lead foot will guarantee oil consumption especially at that mileage.

How much oil is it using?

Yamaha makes a product called Ring Free which has helped some reduce oil consumption. It's worth a try. Change the oil within 100 miles of emptying the fuel tank of Ring Free.

As stated above, do a search on banjo bolt leaks, its pretty common. Often fixed by loosening the bolt and retighten to spec. of 44lbs.

What dosage have you heard has worked well for Ring Free? Directions say 1 ounce to 10 gallons of fuel. The "shock treatment" found online is 2 ounces per gallon.

I've also read several times where people double dosed. Most of this was on high reving performance bikes pulling 10 to 15,000 RPM, not that it changes much of anything. I'd guess the manufacturer wrote the 1:10 script for reason and that was to play it safe no matter where it's used as we have our precious metal plugs, o2 sensors, and CATs...

Do enough reading to have some certainty that those three items are not adversely affected by double dipping as many of the bikes and cars were old school and didn't have any materials that would be affected.

What's the application and current level of consumption?

08 IS350 w/ 171k miles. I'm thinking of trying one ounce per gallon of fuel for a couple 3/4 tanks and changing the oil. I saw one video online where they put it directly
in the crankcase, but it doesn't appear to be advertised to go directly in the oil. My consumption is quite a bit higher than OP's, but has been stable for quite a long time.

Unfortunately, did not seem to make a difference on the oil burning side. Maybe picked up an extra mpg though.

Just one treatment at manaf. recommended dosage? Changed oil when done? Any other details like your current mileage and oil consumption rate?

On my 15 IS350, I realized I burn slightly less oil with Pennzoil Ultra Platinum (on my 4th OCI with PUP after Liqui Moly Oil Flush). Burning roughly 1 quart every 5k. Higher RPM 5K+ = More oil consumption.

Will try Yamaha Ring free but am doubtful it will make a difference at 180,000 miles. I smell the burning oil at a stop or at light. Rings are probably just worn or valve seals are gone. No oil leaks. I can live with 1 quart every 5k and hopefully it remain the same till 200K +

Valve seals can be seen by descending long steep hills using lower gears followed by brisk acceleration. If it spews a cloud of blue smoke, stem seals.

Rings tend to show up from hard acceleration which allows blowby. Some of which is a result of worn rings and/or piston rocking that may or may not produce blue smoke out the back.

If any of these engines missed oil changes in life enough to sludge up, oil scrapper rings, that's where these additives may help. Sticky rings.
