Default What are my options? 2nd gen IS350 rust and leaks

Recently bought a 06’ IS350 with 200k kilometres. For the price it seemed like a good deal but upon further inspection I’ve realized that this wasn’t the case. Owner said that rear main seal was replaced but it looks like I was lied to. It was a private sale so no way for me to get my money back or return the car. Is this something worth saving or accept my loss and try to sell it for whatever I can get.
Despite all this rust and the leaks car drives completely fine. Based in Ontario if anyone local can be of any help.

How much was the car?

I saw the video, noticed the differential leaking a lot of fluid, not sure if you know or not, that is not the rear main seal.

I think replacing those seals are easy to do, have never done them, but I bet nothing compared to pulling the transmission out, flywheel etc to replace the RMS.
And if the mechanic said it is stained on the trans case, they all do. Unless it is leaking a lot of oil from the engine block I would not replace it. Probably going a little higher on oil viscosity and pour some sealant may stop it, and at those miles and condition, why not.

It is a rust bucket, rusted steel tends to look way worst than what it is, unless there is significant structural damage, I would not worry about it. As long as the wheel bearings are in good shape.

Ya, this one should have had a paid inspection so its not your opinion vs seller. You might contact a legal rep. and see what rights you have in your area but that thing looks like hell. I'd be PO and want my money back. The fact is you couldn't service that rear diff if you wanted too as it would likely require replacement of everything around it. And no, replacing the pinion seal is no small job if done properly.

Do you have state inspections? If yes and it doesn't pass you are screwed. Maybe you can use that to get your money back?

Not sure what the laws might be in your area. But here in the states, private sales are "as-is"...unless in writing stating concern things as part of the purchase contract/bill of sale. Not sure you have any legal recourse here. But as long as it doesn't go through oil daily, and just leaks, use high-mileage oils and MAYBE try oil stop-leak for seals (ever needed to do this myself, so do your research before trying).

If you got a deal on the car, there was probably a reason. Buyers should have a chance to check out the vehicle (taking to a shop to use their lift to view the undercarriage); and if the seller won't allow for that, shop elsewhere.

Get it safetied & enjoy the car. Nothing you've mentioned affects how it drives. Interior prob nice.

I bought a rust bucket once. Nicest car I've ever owned in terms of mileage, engine power, interior comfort and options. Was sad to sell it.
