Post How do I know my transmission needs to be replaced

I bought my is250 with 107k miles on it (RWD). I bought the car with the transmission not being able to go into "S" mode (nor could I use the paddle shifters while driving).

I've been driving the car for about 6 months now. Up to this point the car has been driving fine in automatic. The only thing has been that sometimes when I press the accelerator (while already in motion), the engine's RPM's would skyrocket without the car switching gears or moving faster. Yesterday while driving home, the cars transmission suddenly wouldn't grab on the the 1st, 2nd, 5th, and 6th gears, including reverse.

I know that this has something to do with the torque converter within the transmission, but does this mean that I'll have to replace the whole transmission, or could it be an easy fixed with a solenoid replacement, fluid flush, gasket replacement, etc.

I'm sending the car to auto transmission expert to get a more accurate quote on the problem, but I'm also wondering what my other options could be.
