how is this different (better) than electroluminescent gauges?

Optitron is just a fancy name for Lexus electroluminescent guages which they pioneered.

what would the cluster in a 93 ES or SC be called?.....it has the Halographic Effect and Blacks out when the cluster is unlit,but they appear to be incandescent.

i notice a variety of manufactures have their own kind of "optitron" these days.

The older ones are CCFL lit. New ones might include some LED's for the needles and such.
