Here is google'd translation of the main missing link:
Customers expect the primary virtues of the 330i with the driving experience. Hard however truely: In the new 330i the much-praised row six cylinder disappoints. Its 258 HP are enough, in order to obtain competitive measured values, but subjectively it works more arduously and more slowly. Reason: In relation to A4 3,2 and C 350 he has a torque deficit of 30 and/or 50 Newtonmeters . Who wants to keep up with AUDI and Mercedes, the briefly translated BMW must switch out crimpings and much. Only starting from 4500/min it puts owing to Valvetronic so strongly loosely that it equally kept in track.
Short spring travels reduce schaukelbewegungen, cost however noticeably comfort. In connection with the Runflat tires from steifbeiniges unreeling which nervt on bad roads, results. Sharp edged unevenness such as gullydeckel penetrate badly filtered into the interior. Waves and distortions masters the chassis satisfying.

The Skyline sedan came out in Japan in June 2001. So I guess they waited about a year to launch the G35 in the U.S.
The gap between the Japanese and U.S. launch of the IS seems like it'll be much shorter, only a few months.
