The Avalon uses the 3.5 GR with 280hp/260 torque and a 5 speed. So can the IS350, with 20+ more hp, 15+ more torque, and an extra gear shave off more than a second to 60? I'd say probably not.
Just idle speculation on my part.
Whether or not the extra power, gear, performance tires, and rear-drive can take a whole second off the Avalon's 0-60, we don't know yet, but I'm thinking the car should be able to make the run in under 6 seconds.
But then again, as people have pointed out, there's a lot more to driving than 0-60. I'd prefer to have good passing power and high end, but that may just be me.

The Avalon, which has soft cushy suspension will transfer a lot of its weight off its its front-driving wheels to the rear. This is why a front-engine, front-drive car, especially with a luxury-car suspension set-up, will not be taking full advantage of all of its power from a stop. The IS on the other hand, will be tranfering weight back onto its driving wheels. In addition, the IS350 will probably have stickier summer-only tires vs. the all-season touring ones on the Avalon, which will also help acceleration. An extra gear can do a lot for accerlation times, as we've seen in the difference between '03 5AT LS430s and the '04 6AT LS430s.

I have no doubt that the IS350 will do 60 in under 6 seconds, as they claim. I was wondering whether it'll be in the low 5's.
On a different note, I wouldn't say that Lexus is necessarily conservative with their 0-60 numbers. I may be wrong, but I haven't seen any mags achieve the 6.8s claimed for the current IS300. Lexus also claims 5.7s for the 2006 GS430, but only one mag has been able to match that, the rest getting somewhere above that. They also claim 6.9s for the GS300 AWD, and in the only review in which it was tested so far, it got 7.2s.
They probably have some other models where they are conservative though.

i don't know about mag, i only know with my crapping driving (not even close to pro) and my gs400 stock with heavy 19s, i was able to do 6.1 pretty constantly. so with stock 17s i am sure i would have no problem breaking 6 into 5.8 or so, which is exactly what mentioned in the spec.
that's all i could tell though
