I think Ferrari simply calls theirs F1 Transmission. I hear the F1Ferrari tranny is the best clutchless manual out there right now. I think BMWs version SMGII in the M3 probably was the next best that I know of.

Anyway, I too am getting really confused since Lexus seems to want to use the term Sequential even for they are truley automatic trannies. Will the IS350 transmission have a torque convertor or be a computer controlled clutch? That is all I need to know.

Actually VW's DSG is considered the best. It has 2 clutches (!!!), and system automatically "preselects" 2nd clutch to engage where it thinks you will change it to.

Because of that, it is the fastest road car transmission.

Problem with all of these robotized manual transmissions is that usually their Auto mode is "very" jerky compared with an Auto box. Reviewers fail to mention usually, since they dont really care - they gun it for few days and leave happy :-).

I'm guessing the Lambo one is probably somewhat similar to Audi's DSG... if I remember reading correctly the Gallardo shares at least a frame with the Audi LeMans? Don't flame me if I'm wrong I'm only guessing

Well, for $175,000 they'd better put space-ship transmission!

I forgot about the Audi, and I haven't heard much about the Lambo but I would bet it would be pretty good. At least it better be Still though, what exactly will the IS350 get? Is it a sport shift with torque convertor or a clutchless manual?

AT = Automatic transmission - uses torque convertor, everything computer controlled.

Sport AT = automatic transmission with semi-sport gear change via shifter or buttons, etc. still an automatic.

MT = Manual transmission - manual H gate shifting, manual clutch pedal.

SMT = Sequential Manual Transmission. They're oftened called F1-transmission (in Ferraris), SMG (in BMWs), SMT (Toyota MR-S), DSG (VW's twin clutch system). Basically a manual transmission with computer controlled clutch.

they don't have anything else except for those types. Now the MR-S used SMT, which has no automatic mode. BMW's SMG (sequential M Gearbox) and Ferrari's F1 transmissions do. I guess now Toyota calls automatic SMT MMT now (credit to spwolf), but basically they're still SMTs, just a difference of if they offer auto mode or not.

So which one will the IS350 get? SMT/MMT, or Sport Shift automatic?
