It's getting a little confusing, I think someone mentioned that the press release is not entirely accurate & the IS250 will get a regular manual with clutch ? which BTW is what I think it will be.

I'm wondering if this new SMT is carried over from the first gen IS (in manual mode, if you didn't upshift, it would do it for you anyway). Or is it like the Prelude's (you had to upshift, if not you'd be in first forever)?

Manual 6 with clutch pedal
Both IS220D & IS250 will get as standard transmission a 6 speed manual with clutch. You can see on the pics from geneva, the stick ans the three pedals.
Optionnal on the IS250 and standard on the IS350 will be the 6 speed automatic transmission which can be operated via the paddles or the stick Push for upper gears and pull for lower gears.

As to the SMT - no, it would be MMT - MultimodeManualTransmission. SMT is slightly older system which does not have an "automatic" mode, while new MMT (now "widely" used in European Toyota's) does.
Old IS300 was just an auto.

]Yeah there is an editing error because their stats show otherwise. Standard
tranny in the new IS250 is a 6spd MANUAL. The 6spd sequential shift AUTO is optional.
Should have said, "Standard in the IS 250, a new 6-speed manual transmission is designed to take full advantage of its free-revving V6 engine".

wait a second....
can we define some terms first?
SMT:
MMT:
SMG: true manual transmission, clutch controlled by computer. (BMW, Ferrari)
I am getting confused....
What I thought Lexus was doing:
IS250 auto or standard
IS350 auto
and by auto, I mean regular automatic with planetary gears and torque converters, not BMW true-clutch auto (SMG), right?? Please correct me if I am wrong.

Optional, 6-spd automatic (with shift paddle mode)
IS250 AWD: Standard, 6-spd automatic (with shift paddle mode)
IS350 RWD: Standard, 6-spd automatic (with shift paddle mode)
