Hehe, I'll totally take that bet. I just don't see how the 2006 IS350 will start at $33k when the 2005 ES330 starts at $32,825.

Plus, my sales guy was speaking with a Lexus corp rep last week and got a base price figure between 35 and 36K from him. I don't think a sales guy would dare relay a figure like that to a customer who was putting down a deposit unless he was pretty sure that the corporate rep was not BSing, especially when he easily could have said, "we still have no official pricing on this car yet."

All that said, I think all of us will all be able to get a pretty nicely equipped 350 for about 38-40K or a nicely equipped 250 for 32-34K.
indeed, there is simply and absolutly no way it could be that cheap. Impossible. If it starts at 36k I would consider it nicely priced.

I think you can forget the times when Lexus was undercutting the competition. New GS and RX400h show that clearly. They have hit what is considered an "sweet spot" for luxury car maker at around 300,000 sales per year and they will not lower their pricing to go above. If anything, they will have more expensive but better cars which should even out demand and make more profits. Consider how there are shortages of RX330 these days, they simply do not have to produce gazillions of them anymore, and RX330's were always nicely discounted by dealers due to sheer numbers of them pushed out. GS is considerably more expensive than new M, and is selling better than new M.

And you simply can not compare prices in different countries since you really do not know anything about taxes. How are the cars taxed? They could be taxed based on price, there could be additional fees based on displacement, pricing levels, hp, pollution, etc, etc. US has cheapest cars in the world, with almost no taxes at all, it is an heaven for car lovers. Almost every other country has complicated car taxing scheme.

There is no way a base IS 350 will be 36k b/c that is only 1k less than the base 330 BMW. Lexus has always been thousands less than the Germans, not hundreds.

In every class, Lexus is thousands less than the Germans. That is why I suspect it will be around 33k. Besides, every year, prices go up. In 5 years, the cars base will be 35k or so......

A 325 starts at 30,995 or 31k. Goodness, the IS 250 might just start around 28k When I think about it, it is the smallest Lexus engine since the ES 250, it will be priced low.

Lexus basically has said, we want around 40-50k IS sales a year. THat is VERY possible with the pricing I suggest.

I think Lexus will low-ball the price and not worry about profit with the IS as every model is selling and very profitable. They want to increase MARKET SHARE, thus expect aggresive pricing.

Good God I am playing with the "buid a 3" on the BMW site, you can hit 40k EASY with the 325. EASY. You can get a 330 to 45k with no issues.

The IS won't have any issues in the pricing department vs the 3. Now for the other guys, TL/G35 etc, I dont' think Lexus is worried about them anyway.

That's funny because I'd never consider a 3-series, but I may consider the G35 and would definitely consider the TL. The TL is currently my #1 pick in this segment but I'm pretty sure the IS is going to change that in a major way.

All the big players in this segment are closely watching how the others are doing. Of course Lexus is going to concern itself with two players (TL and G) that have spanked them in the past in this segment. It would be stupid and arrogant of them not to do so.

The TL sold 78,000 units and the G sold 71,000 units last year. There is no doubt that Lexus is going after some of their pie.

BTW, even if the IS250=$31,000 and IS350=$36,000, Lexus will definitely meet their goal of 45,000 cars per year. Only about 9000 of those will be the more expensive IS350.

I was able to take the information from http://lexus.jp/models/is/spec/equipment.html and translate it to English. I'll try to get the other specs converted to English as well soon.

Thanks for the translation.

So I guess all Japanese IS models have Navi/rearview monitor/LCD screen standard?

Of course many people will cross shop and of couse some like you won't concern yourself with the 3. What I was saying is Lexus is very, very focused on the 3, more so than any other car in the segment.

Lexus has never made any mention of Acura or infintii in any press release. The only time I read them make a comment was in the "Lexus Story" where they said they learned from they're mistakes.

Clealry they are not ignoring them but the TL is not even a Euro based car, its built for Americans by Americans in AMerica. The G35 is more what the IS is about but its not a global car like the iS.

THe IS debuted when the 3 series did. The IS coupe will debut when the 3 coupe comes out. That is where the focus is, on the worldwide leader, not bit players.
