Close to the same 0-60 times? Is that all we look at? 5.1 vs 5.7? What about 1/4 mile? 13.7 vs 14.4?

The IS actually weighs right at the same as the GS.... look at the publised weight numbers. This information has been out for a while now.

IS weights the same as GS? Which one exactly? GS430 is at least 200lbs heavier than IS350...

Even the GS300 RWD is 3615 lb., the IS350 is 3527 lb., GS430 is 3748 lb.

Default Road and Track

October Road and Track has IS350 test that shows 1/4 mile figures of 14.5/98.6 with test gas milage of 17.5 mpg. Flipping to the back of the mag, I see their GS430 figures of 14.2/99.5 with 17.6 mpg.

Hmmm... while this is not 100% scientific test, the V8 motor with less power pulls a heavier car faster with better gas milage. At near 100 mph, the .3 seconds advantage in the 1/4 mile equals a healthy whooping of the IS. Note too that the V6 Altima with less power does 1/4 mile in 14.5/99.4 with 23 mpg.

While the IS350 is about as fast as a stock 1964 GTO, the V6 is a little disappointing; with all the techno whistles and bells, I'd expect the engine to be best of bread. But both Chevy, Dodge and Chrysler make big heavy sedans that will blow its doors off in a drag race.

Still, this is a very impressive ride.

If you read the text of the Road & Track test you will find that they tested the IS 350 on a "power sapping 93-degree summer day." As R&T does not correct performance numbers to standardized atmospheric conditions (I believe C&D and MT do), these numbers are not representative of what would be obtained under less extreme conditions and care should be used in making comparisons (especially to the other mags results).

My Dad owns a GS430 and absoloutely hates the IS models. Maybe that just fits into the "different breed" status.

It's not suprising that the engine with less power but MORE torque pulls the HEAVIER car faster Torque means a lot in the acceleration department.

Interesting comment...how does the new GS interior not look "up-to-date"? My only gripe is with the low resolution nav display, but no other Lexus has the new one, sans the IS.

The new IS interior is essentially a carbon copy of the new GS interior.
