Otherwise, every model mentioned above has the smart access button on the door handle:

So in order for the smart access to work you have to have the fob in your pocket, right? So in other words don't leave home without your fob (no keys). Right?
Does the door unlock from 10 feet away as your approaching or does it only unlock when you hold the door handle?
Does the passanger door also unlock-can that be programed for the passanger side not to unlock automatically.
Sorry all my cars I've ever owned have used remotes to unlock the car so this smart access is confusing.
I love the idea of smart access, it's just I'm so use to having a remote to unlock doors & key for the ignition.

I thought that all you have to do in order to unlock the door was to have the fob on your person and hold the door handle. If this is true, then what is the purpose of the button on the door handle. Do you have to press that in order to unlock the doors?

You need to press the button to enter. It won't unlock automatically for safety/security reasons.
A passenger can open their door as long as the key fob is within approx 10 ft of the car.
I don't know if someone from the outside (even with the key fob) can open the car if someone has locked the car from the inside. Anyone know?

Yes, you are correct all you have to do in order to unlock the door was to have the fob on your person and hold the door handle.
The black button on the door is used to lock the car.
It's nice never having to take the keyfob out of your pocket. We have a 2006 GS300 AWD.

I didn't notice it. But the rear passenger doors don't have those buttons...

SmartKey:
Key needs to be within approx. 4-5 feet of whichever door you are opening. You must be within range AND pull door handle for door to unlock/open. If you have a key and step up to the driver door and your friend is on the other side of the car, passenger door won't open for them. (Theory is if you are alone and a killer is on the other side of car, you don't want the other door to open.)
If you are sitting inside your car with door locked and the same killer comes up to your door, it won't open. The key knows if you are inside or outside of car. Also you cannot lock your key in the trunk, as it knows if it's on the inside or outside of the trunk. This is one of the features that makes it "smart".
If you have the key in your pocket and accidentally "walk away" from the car with engine still on, car will still drive until the engine is turned off, then it will disable itself. So watch out at the valet station!
Push Button Start:
Key must be inside the car, but can be in your friend's pocket who is sitting in the backseat or inside your purse/pocket. As long as it's somewhere inside the cabin. You must have your foot on the brake in order for engine to start.
Door locks:
Those little black buttons on the door handles are for locking the car after you get out. Remember the key has been in your pocket/purse this whole time so you don't want to go fishing for the key after all that just to lock the doors. ( Although you can still lock from the inside also.)
Hope this helps clarify things.
