I would check the CA DMV for some laws about getting a car out-of-state.

I had trouble with it a couple of years ago. A new car in CA has smog sensors that is installed prior to delivery as per law. Other states do not have this sensor, and you can't register a new car into CA if it was bought out of state. They won't let you register it because of stricter emmissions standards set by the EPA (Environmental Protection Act).

If you want to claim it as a used car, it needs to have 7,500 miles at the time of purchase. I once tried to register a used motorcycle with only 6,000 miles, and the DMV did not let me. I had to get my uncle in Vegas to buy it from me, ride it 1,500 miles, and then he sold it back to me to register it with the DMV with enough miles.

Please be aware of CA laws. Make a couple of phone calls to save you from trouble/hassles later on.

Thanks for the advice. I looked into the applicable laws before making the purchase, and was prepared to go through a lot of paperwork, but it turned out that it wasn't necessary. The dealership I purchased the car from (Metro Lexus in Brook Park, OH) actually has a clerk who handles out-of-state purchases and completed all the necessary paperwork (including California registration) for me. The car is registered with California temp tags (and the plates are in the mail), and I paid California taxes on it at the time of purchase.

All in all, pretty convenient.

It's great that you got the car you wanted but too bad you had to go out of state to get it. So how much in extra fees did you have to pay to get the car in OH? This might be something I'll do if CA doesn't get the 350's I want.

Absolutely nothing. Ohio has lower taxes than California, so you pay OH tax, then the dealership files an out-of-state purchase form with CA and you pay the difference between OH and CA tax to CA. (About $100.) Then you pay CA registration fees and taxes (about $300) just like you would have if you were purchasing the car here to begin with. The total cost is identical, since the IS350 in its default configuration is already CA emissions compliant.

Of course, that just gets you the car *in Ohio*. Then you have to find a way to get it back here, and that's where the extra cost comes into play. I chose to just drive it, myself -- good way to break it in, and a nice break from everyday life and a chance for my wife and I to visit friends along the way. Our alternative would have been to have it shipped, which would have run about $1200. A bit spendy, but it saves putting 2500 miles on the car, not to mention gas and lodging, so it's actually the cheaper route.

The whole process was very painless and I was quite pleased with the way it worked out. Certainly beats a 4 month wait.

I think the 250 AWD and RWD should have been maxed out with all options at around 33-35K, considering it's a sports sedan without a real sport sedan engine. All cars in this size range break the 220 hp range. The IS350 should then continue from 35K-40K max. Now it's going to be very blurry when the ES350 comes out with more hp than the IS 250.........

Just as a quick comparison; my IS250 SE Auto in Argento Ice Silver with black leather cost the equivalent of US$46,692 in the UK at today's interest rate of 1.767 dollars to the pound.

Mind you we pay 17.5% VAT in that bringing the before tax price to US$39,737. And don't even get me started on the petrol (gas)...

Got $500 off + 1 free oil change on like car today, Wooo! Not a great deal but I got $ off when some are paying MSRP. They said they had to go out of state to get it...maybe bull, but they seamed honest. If you need it, I can send you a copy?

which vehicle did you get and what options. I was looking at a 250 with NAV/LUX/and Prem package. They gave me 2k off.......still a 3K profit over invoice......doesn't sit with me very well
