How many miles is too many...
...for a "new" car? the IS250 I am looking to buy has 550 miles on it. Should they adjust the price accordingly or make other concessions?

That to me is a demo car and should be priced $1k-$3k below normal. I will not pay a 'new' car price for a vehicle with over 25 miles on it, and in fact have never bought a car with over 12 miles on it (averaging about 7 miles on the ODO over last 4 vehicles - easy to do as I custom ordered the last 3 and picked them up whilst still in their 'wrapper' at the dealership).

wolverine, can you take pics of your car in blue onyx? Daytime with direct sun would like to see it.

I'm going to try to be real careful here, becuse I don't want to offend or worry anyone. Unfortunately, the facts arent positive.
For my own preference, I would rather not have a single mile on my car. I know that's impossible, but at least I'll know the 3 or so miles put on the car were done so by Lexus technicians who have driven dozens and have no need to abuse my car.
What horrifies me about a car with 500 miles on it is that just about every one of those miles is a hard mile, at RPMs WAY too high during a break-in period.
The most critical time for a new engine is between miles 1 and 150. This is when the rings seat. There are also considerations between miles 150 and 2000 that involve the engine and the brakes.
I had the opportunity to take a fully loaded, ML equipped, IS 350 with 500 miles on it and passed for the reasons stated above.
Reality? It probably doesnt matter, but I'm so **** about my car that I have a problem with any abuse during the break-in period.

Whoah, that's got "demo" written all over it. I'd still buy it just for the extra savings because Lexus is such a great car that the break in period doesn't concern me. I've broken in all 3 of my Lexus' by driving to Las Vegas and going about 85 mph. Dealers usually discount demos at a rate of 15 cents per mile, but you can try to get more. This is if you are BUYING.
If you are LEASING then the dealer probably won't want to discount. They will simply start the lease at 551 miles so you are not accountable for previous miles used.
As for new cars, average miles is anywhere between 6 to 30 miles on odometer. These cars get driven around at the port, driven onto the truck, driven to gas station, and driven by technicians. If you are very lucky you will find one with 3, that is the minimum after PDI test drive by technician to make sure it's all in check.

Dealer's dilemma...
Everybody wants to test drive the newest model. It was a zoo today and the IS250 AWD we have probably had a couple hundred miles added to the Odometer. Officially in our state, Maryland, a demo is any car with over 300 miles. A dealer will usually give consideration for a demo except the IS250/350 is getting list right now and we have sold every car we have put in the showroom. This car is getting a lot of looks. We had BMW's, Mercedes and Audi's parked on the lot while their owners satisfied their curiosity.

Man, I guess I was lucky that I only had 21 miles on the odometer (25 after I test drove) when I bought my IS350. I was worried that someone else might have taken it out and driven it. But I was reassured by my dealer that once they got it from port, they hid the car so no one would even see it. But 550 miles on a "new" car... I would have passed that car to the next buyer in a heartbeat.

21 miles? Sounds like your car was test driven before you picked it up. When I picked up my new 04 IS300 at Longo, it had 3 miles on the ODO when it still had the plastic. By the time I picked it up for delivery after PDI it had 5 miles on the ODO when I drove it off the lot.
