Default Info on the RA60 6 Speed

The specific notes for that X-Runner transmission from my tech documents say:

All new RA60 / F 6-speed manual transmission

1. light weight, low friction design

2. for high torque, high rpm engines

a. shared w/ V6 Tundra

Gear Ratios
Type

I - 4.171
II - 2.190
III - 1.488
IV - 1.193
V - 1.00
VI - 0.849
REV - 3.607

I don't know why this couldn't be applied. Obviously it was designed for low down torque from a truck based engine, but adjusted gearing aside, the basic transmission should be a viable option.

You guys sound like Industrial Engineers =) I'm suprised I didn't hear some references to six-sigma and Demming in there...haha

I agree whole-heartedly with your assessment. It's why the Japanese manfuacturers are bettter than all the rest.

It's a simple method in the big picture, but it's a very tight and complex system that works very well. Throwing in a manual tranny variant to the assembly line requires alot more work than just stuffing in a tranny and mating it to the engine. And obviously the CARB/EPA standards just add another hurdle to it. They figure the larger sales volume of automatics will make them more money than having to resort to building 10 MT IS350s out of 100 vehicles. The slow sales of manual tranny Lexus' stem back from the 90-91 ES250, 92-93 ES300 and even the 92-98 SC300. It was very rare to find these cars in manual, let alone hard to sell. Just ask any Lexus salesperson that's been with Lexus from the beginning.

I don't know about the IS350 MT, but I can confirm that the above reference to the 96 Supra is correct.
