back on topic my light always comes on when i have about 30 mpg approximate displayed.. when thats used up you have a 2 gal reserve so yes you can make it in 20 miles back home. considering we get over 20mpg

I dont think that range is accurate. I bet there's about 2 gals left in the tank when it comes on.

When my light comes on, I can go about 35 miles before the Range Approx reads 0. If I don't fill up at that point, then I can go 10-20 more miles before filling up, and I fill up about 16 gallons, which means theres about 1 gallon left in the tank.

the system in the lexus seems very conservative. based on what ive read here and other forums, zero doesnt mean zero. i have a ford product and its spot on - when it says i have 20 miles left, i fill up and the numbers verify just about one gallon was left. i guess toyota wants to be conservative?

Anyone find it funny that in our society our THIRD level of warning still isn't absolute? First you have the gas gauge, then you have the gas light, and lastly you have the miles remaining display...To me (as an engineer) if the display reads 0 miles remaining, you should be unable to move any farther..otherwise this is wrong. Still though I see the need- just something funny to point out

I think it comes down to liability. Toyota doesn't want to be sued because some guy runs out of gas in the middle of no where and the car said he had 1 mile to go (even though he's 50 miles from a gas station). They've already been sued already because some people ran over their child in their own driveway for not making reverse cameras standard on lexus' so I don't exactly blame them. Oh yah, I've gone about 10 miles with the computer saying 0. I know it's very conservative, but just having it there saying 0 made me nervous.

Our tank size is approximately 17.1gal. I've driven the car down to exactly 0miles left (and the needle perfectly on E) right when I arrived at the gas station and pumped about 15.2-15.4 gallons of gas. So yes there's about another 1.5-2 gallons of reserve.
I also remember there being another thread of someone actually run their 2IS to the point where there is absolutely no gas left. We can search for that thread. If I recall it was about 50miles after the approx. miles says 0 which is about right for 1.5-2 gallons of reserve

Don't forget when refueling air pockets may prevent truly filling the tank & it is impossible to use all the fuel in the tank.
My 94 Mustang would often fail to start with low fuel when parked on a steep hill heading uphill. I would have to coast/ push to level ground to start the car.
